Parent Volunteer Newsletter

November 2023

It is hard to believe we only have two more weekends in the fall term before Thanksgiving Break. With the temperature dropping, we are reminded that fall is here and winter is not far behind. What a beautiful October we had on campus. Warm temperatures, fall sports, conferences, and a fun-filled Parents Weekend. We would like to thank all the volunteers, sponsors, organizers, and donors who gave their time, talents, and generosity to help bring back Rumsey Hall's annual Auction & Celebration. You can click here to view photos of the special evening shared with alums, community members, current and past parents, grandparents, faculty, and staff.

With Thanksgiving around the corner, we are excited to announce that we will be holding our 4th Annual Piece of the Pie event. On Thursday, November 16 at drop-off, we will be collecting pies for faculty and staff. Below, you'll find a link for SignUpGenius if you wish to participate. Please remember, all pies must be shelf-stable and no nuts! Pies may be homemade or store-bought. If you are a boarding parent, you have the option to donate and parent volunteers will purchase pies on your behalf.

-This will be an introduction to ice skating without introducing concepts of hockey. Emphasis will be placed on personal skill development within a fun-filled environment.

-The 2023 LEARN TO SKATE program will be run by Rumsey Hall Hockey coaches and student-athletes. The goal of the LEARN TO SKATE program is to take your child from the first steps on the ice to being able to navigate the ice while turning, stopping, and skating backward. This program is not for children who are able to skate well and are looking for more advanced technique instruction.

Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up — she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.

Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing.

Hello Beautiful

William Waters grew up in a house silenced by tragedy, where his parents could hardly bear to look at him, much less love him. So it’s a relief when his skill on the basketball court earns him a scholarship to college, far away from his childhood home. He soon meets Julia Padavano, a spirited and ambitious young woman who surprises William with her appreciation of his quiet steadiness. With Julia comes her family; she is inseparable from her three younger sisters: Sylvie, the dreamer, is happiest with her nose in a book and imagines a future different from the expected path of wife and mother; Cecelia, the family’s artist; and Emeline, who patiently takes care of all of them. Happily, the Padavanos fold Julia’s new boyfriend into their loving, chaotic household.

Feyre's survival rests upon her ability to hunt and kill – the forest where she lives is a cold, bleak place in the long winter months. So when she spots a deer in the forest being pursued by a wolf, she cannot resist fighting it for the flesh. But to do so, she must kill the predator and killing something so precious comes at a price ...

Dragged to a magical kingdom for the murder of a faerie, Feyre discovers that her captor, his face obscured by a jewelled mask, is hiding far more than his piercing green eyes would suggest. Feyre's presence at the court is closely guarded, and as she begins to learn why, her feelings for him turn from hostility to passion and the faerie lands become an even more dangerous place.

Helping Your Kids Manage Media

Consumption During War Time

As we all know, a horrific tragedy is happening in the Middle East. It is yet another call to action for us adults to proactively mitigate the negative impacts of media seen by our kids and teens. Today, I am concentrating on three steps to help protect our kids from the downsides of social media and overall screen time, especially given the prevalence of violence, misinformation, and distressing content right now.

How to Foster a Growth Mindset in Children

A few years ago, when my son Shaiyar was about 6, I noticed that he’d get down on himself about small setbacks, like losing a video game match to his sister or getting the wrong answer to a math problem. He tended to beat himself up about things, and it went far beyond a mild wallow to a full-on mope—often for hours. He just let little things ruin his day, and there was no consoling him once it set in.
