A Message from Fr. Gary

I'm a Garden

November is the end of the Christian year and the beginning of the new one on the 27th -Advent.  We have the Fall Fair, Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service on the 20th at 5pm at the Community Synagogue.  Finally there is Commitment Sunday, 27th, setting our footprint for 2017 by offering our skills, time and financial offering.

A wonderful image for ourselves is the garden.  Each of us is God's garden filled with potential to blossom and to show beauty as we listen and respond with grace and compassion. Yet we also can be attacked by any number of bugs, fungi, and weeds that stifle our practice of following the Lord.

Let's take a look at a few of these.   Weeds are a huge challenge to a gardener.  I've discovered that weeds can disguise themselves as the plants they're growing next to, making them hard to spot, and can eventually crowd out the plant.  In our personal garden, grumbling can cleverly disguise itself as legitimate words that are hard to spot in our conversations.  Yet grumbling is a weed.  What happens when we grumble?  We crowd out our own goodness as we recite a litany of complaints and frustrations, gnawing on them to ourselves with self-satisfied relish or declaring them to someone else in a state of self-righteous justification.  While we chew away, we're not in the present moment and will most likely miss God's direction for us.  Grumbling blocks listening and responding.  Be on the alert to recognize and pluck this nasty weed.

We can nourish our garden with acceptance by acknowledging the limits that life has placed on us and live out those limits in love.  We do what we are given to do, accepting that it is the Will of God.  We can view our daily tasks and responsibilities as God's plan for us and do them in love.  The most holy responsibility is to love one another and to let this love guide our choices and our actions.

A few more important ways to enrich soil:  nourish your garden with fertilizers like respecting people, supporting with patience the weaknesses of others, seeking peace in all you do, and putting the love of Christ before everything else.  (St. Benedict's Toolbox, Jane Tomaine)

Stewardship 2017

Dear Parish Family,

This week you will have received your year-to-date contribution statements.  At the bottom of your statement you'll see how much of your pledged 2016 financial commitment is still outstanding.  Please try to complete your pledges soon. St. Stephen's missions, ministries, and good works depend on year round cashflow.  This year we've had many parishioners who have yet to contribute toward their pledged amount. As a result the Church's cash position has decreased.  I implore you not to wait until the last minute. You can donate online by visiting our homepage  http://www.ststephenspw.org and clicking the "donate" button at the bottom of the homepage. It will take you to this screen:

Hope Everyone had a FUN and Happy Halloween!!!

The Sunday School children have been very busy throughout the month of October.
                                                        Let's Fill An Ark!!!
                                         Animals Two - by -Two

They have been preparing their animal banks for the Heifer International fundraising project.  They made the animal banks out of paper mache balloons that they painted and will be turning them into the animal of their choice.

As part of the Sunday school year, the children will learn about community service, and how helping others is part of our faith.  The children will be engaged in activities to raise money to buy an Ark through Heifer International.   The Ark provides animals to people in poor communities throughout the world, providing needed nutrition (i.e. milk), clothing (i.e. wool), the ability to sell surplus products to provide money to support other needs like education, and importantly the ability to pay it forward by passing along to other families in the community the off spring of the original animal pair.  All families are provided with training in how to care for their gift.

The purpose of the animal banks is for the children to collect spare change to donate, so they too, feel as if they have important part in this very special fundraising project.   Information regarding the Ark and Heifer International can be found at  www.heifer.org .    Please support our young people as they grow in their faith and connect to a wider global community.

The Youth Formation meetings are going great!!!
They take place in the rectory with Father Gary on Sunday evenings from 6:30-8PM.   It's never too late to join. It is for all in grades 6th and up.
Thanks very much to Jennifer and Robin who are there to help.

                     FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER

All of the children will be participating in an "All Saints Day Parade" at the beginning of the 10 AM family service on November 6th.
The younger ones will be carrying the banner and the older ones will carry and read their saint poster.   We will meet in the parish hall at  9:45  that morning to practice.   If you want to read a saint poster, please let Rhonda know at  [email protected].

The Sunday School will be collecting food for Our Lady of Fatima's Thanksgiving Food Drive.

A recommended list of holiday food items will be handed out after the "All Saints Family Service" on November 6th.

Just in case you can't attend that service here is the list:
stuffing mix,  canned vegetables, f resh potatoes,  canned or fresh sweet potatoes,  boxed mashed potatoes,  cranberry sauce,  turkey gravy,  cookies, pie or any type of dessert.

The food will be delivered to Our Lady of Fatima and distributed by the Youth Group on Sunday Nov. 20th.   Please kindly leave your donations in the baskets located at both entrances of the church.

St Stephen's will also support our Lady of Fatima and ADOPT A FAMILY this year that is need of a Merry Christmas.  The family we are adopting live right here in Port Washington.
The father and mother are 32 and 29 years old and their three daughters are 2 1/2, 5 and 17.
Starting Nov 13th, there will be "GIVING TREE" located in the main entrance of the church.   Please consider taking an ornament or two :):)   Each ornament will have one specific item on it.   All gifts will be delivered by  Sunday, December 18th.   Let's make this family's wishes come true and give them a very special Christmas.

Thank you so much for your support in advance. It is  so fulfilling to do something good right here in our own community.

                   HAVE  A  VERY  HAPPY  THANKSGIVING

"Everything belongs"

What does it mean to belong?  Join us on Sunday, December 4 for a discussion about what the oneness of all creation means to each of us in our everyday lives and in the life of our church.  Where and how are we inclusive?  Where and how are we exclusive?  Bob and Dolores Kazanjian O'Brien will facilitate this event, based on their experience at a conference they attended at the Center for Action and Contemplation (CAC), and on the teachings of Fr. Richard Rohr, Franciscan priest, teacher, author and founder and leader of the CAC.  We will meet at 11:30 in the parish hall, Room 104, and will engage together in meditation, prayer, and discussion for about one hour.  Registration is not necessary, but it will help us plan better if you let us know you are coming.
Please call Bob and Dolores at 516-944-9054 or call the church office.

Ministry News

We have had several changes to our Lay Ministry team in recent weeks. On October 30th, Fr. Gary commissioned  Gy. Dioguardi as a Eucharistic Minister.

Gy. has lived in Port Washington North for 51 years and joined Saint Stephen's two years ago.  He is the Provost of Online Studies and Professor of Early Christian Cultural Anthropology at the Western Orthodox Theological Seminary.
He is also a Fellow of the International Order of Theological Researchers.  Also on that day, Caroline Peiser, who has been an Acolyte for several years, was trained as a Crucifer. Her twin brother Jordan will also be trained soon. And finally, Avery von Roeschlaub joined the ranks of Acolytes last month; Avery's first service was on October 23rd, when his grandfather Kurt von Roeschlaub was officially installed as Rector Emeritus.

The current Ministry Schedule is here.
