Advocacy works! Thanks to all of you who advocated for Initiative 1639, wrote letters to the editors of your local papers, and made the time to vote, Washington's children will be safer! The Washington Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics has been advocating for safe storage laws for years, because safe storage is a proven prevention strategy and we know that it effectively keeps firearms out of the wrong hands. Now, with the passage of Initiative 1639, safe storage, enhanced background checks and a higher age to purchase certain firearms will help prevent firearm injuries and deaths in our state. Thank you.

The physician champion team for the Pediatric Transforming Clinical Practice Initiative (P-TCPi) has been partnering with the Washington State Medical Homes Partnership Program to decrease potentially avoidable Emergency Department utilization and to support family engagement and competency.
We have piloted materials to help families improve health literacy, focusing on families with poor social determinants of health and those who are using the ED for avoidable reasons.
