Message from our Principal

It's now November and that brings falling leaves and adds a chill in the air. Hopefully the school year has settled in to a productive and positive routine for your family. HMS has recently wrapped up the 1st 9 weeks and off to a fast start in the 2nd. I want to remind everyone of the importance of communication between home and school. We need each other's support to be truly successful transitioning your child through the middle school years. I encourage each of you to come in today for our Open House between 3 - 6 pm to check up on their academic progress. It stresses to the students that you understand how important education is, and helps them view learning as a priority as they become increasingly more responsible for their education in the middle school years.

November is full of opportunity and important dates for our students. Our fall sports seasons have wrapped up and we celebrated their successes during an all-school fall sports Pep Rally. I would like to thank Mr. Crano, Mr. Hicks and the HMS band along with Ms. Treglia and the cheerleaders for making this such an exciting event. Congratulations and thank you to the coaches and teams for their hard work and dedication to the programs. Football: Mario Costantini, Anthony Saccoccia, Donnie Price, Mat Davis, Dave Sanders, Seth Fluharty and Thad Crosier. Volleyball: Paige Bolding and Molly Polling. Cross Country: Tiffany Ribar. Currently the winter sports are getting started and we want to wish each of them the best of luck with their seasons.

Congratulations to the HMS Band on their recent performances during the halftime of the Big Red football game and the Varsity Show. They sounded great! Also, we want to wish much luck to the Mrs. Macre and her Drama members as they will be performing the musical of Annie this Friday (7pm) and Saturday (3pm). And if you see snow falling, be sure to get a look at the snowplow that was designed and painted by the Art students in Mrs. Wineman's class. Great Job! Speaking of art, Mrs. Wineman's class also created several picture prompts that were used at the recent fun Fall Sadie Hawkins 7th & 8th grade Dance. Special thanks to Mr. DeFrances and his class for taking the photos. Finally, I'd like to thank the HMS Leading For Success teams for their efforts and organization on making HMS better than the rest!!! I am extremely proud and impressed with all the staff and students at Harding Middle School. They make this place great!

"AGRICULTURE IS COOL" SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS ANNOUNCED

The Ag is Cool program, which celebrated its seventh year in 2017, provides free Fair admission for any exiting fourth grade student and a chaperone to visit the Ohio State Fair to learn about agriculture. Once at the Fair, the students visit a total of 10 different stations located in barns, education centers and livestock facilities to find key answers to questions such as "How many glasses of milk does a dairy cow produce each day?" or use information they have learned to name surprising products that are made using soybeans. Dozens of the students who visit those stations then return home to write an essay or creative story about what they learned while visiting the "Agriculture is Cool" education program held during the Ohio State Fair. These essays are then reviewed by a panel of judges, who selects just four to be honored as the best in the state.
One of the top essays were written by Gabby Bodo from Harding Middle School. Representatives from the Ohio State Fair, Ohio Department of Agriculture and the Ohio Farm Bureau Federation will visit each of the winning students' schools at the following dates to present a giant scholarship check during a special assembly at the school. During the presentations, each winner will read his or her essay to their classmates.

Dome Theater Coming to Harding Middle School

A unique scientific event is coming to Steubenville as the Dome Theater stops at Harding Middle School on Nov. 4.
Sponsored by the Jefferson County Educational Service Center, the presentation will be held in the school gym from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is free to the public. The Dome Theater was developed by Rice University and the Houston Museum of Natural Science and History with added support from NASA and includes a portable, high-definition planetarium that can hold 35-55 individuals depending on age. It travels throughout the country to provide highly innovative, educational entertainment and unlimited on-demand programs that feature stunning visuals, out-of-this-world knowledge and award-winning narrators including Tom Hanks, Sigourney Weaver, Harrison Ford and Walter Cronkite.
It is provided through Quest for Success, a program funded through a 21st Century Grant from the Ohio Department of Education. Quest for Success includes weekly after school activities aimed at boosting math and literacy skills and social development within Jefferson County students in grades 5-8. Registration will be taken on Saturday for students interested in those activities, which are held at the former McKinley Elementary School in Steubenville in conjunction with Franciscan University of Steubenville and Coleman Professional Services. Additional events are held on Saturdays in cooperation with Brightway Services of Smithfield and more programs are being planned.
For more information, contact Mark Masloski, program coordinator and administrative assistant at JCESC, at (740) 283-3347, Ext. 134, or program assistant Martariesa Fiala at Ext. 100.
