National CyberWatch Center's ICE

The National CyberWatch Center's
Innovations in Cybersecurity Education (ICE)
member program is launching on  January 1, 2017

National CyberWatch members are some of the greatest innovators when it comes to educational breakthrough. Now, through National CyberWatch Center, they can share their innovations, accelerate their adoption through the academic world, and receive proper recognition for their work.

The goals of the program are:
1. Engage National CyberWatch Center members in a meaningful manner and provide them both a platform to present and be recognized for their best ideas, as well as a repository to find and emulate good ideas of other members

2. Identify innovations in cybersecurity education

3. Assemble innovations in cybersecurity education and make the collection available to a wide audience, with priority placed on National CyberWatch Center members

HERE IS HOW THE PROGRAM WILL WORK:
In the Summer 2017, a panel of cybersecurity educators and National CyberWatch Center partners will review these submissions and select a small number for national visibility.  A reference document will be created listing all nominations with a brief write up for each and will be made available. Special presentations of the winning submissions will form workshops and ceremonies at the 2017 Community College Cyber Summit (3CS).

Scholarship For Service

New Project, New Opportunities for
2-YR Colleges Launched!

As the cybersecurity field of study continues to grow, the demand for well-prepared security professionals has also expanded. Unfortunately, good paying security jobs in all sectors, but especially in the federal government, are still going unfilled.
The barrier: Applicants for government agency cybersecurity positions must hold at least a Bachelor's degree.  In order to creatively surmount this hurdle, NCC submitted a grant proposal to NSF that included the needed research into the transition process between
2-yr colleges and 4-year institutions, targeting schools that are currently participants in NSF's "Scholarship For Service" program.  While the SFS program has been around for at least ten years, the current application makes available funds for students in 2-year schools that are partnered with the 4-year SFS schools, with the objective of increasing the flow of candidates into the last 2 years of a Bachelor's program, along with a guaranteed post-graduate job placement in a federal, state, tribal, or county
government agency.

Components of NCC's grant include program capacity building workshops for both faculty and students, plus the availability of mini-grants aimed at strengthening a school's efforts to build effective bridging programs between the sophomore and junior years of participating SFS school partners. Researchers for the newly-funded NCC grant,
Dr. Costis Toregas (4-yr school representative) and Dr. Barbara Belón (2-year school representative) have already begun their efforts in data collection on current 2-4-year partnerships, barriers to success, and the eventual creation of a bridge program that will not only strengthen the SFS program but increase its nationwide capacity.
Look for more information in this publication in the coming months.
