President's Note

Dear Friends,

Our last Art Critique is this Saturday the 4th
. Lets see what you have been working on this summer. I will be there to say Hello and meet our newcomers. See you there.

Our Spring Show date has changed! Please make a note that the Spring Show will be on May 4th - 6th, 2018. Our "save the date" notice (sent last month), brought to light a conflict with another art show in Leominster. We decided to change our date so artists can attend both.

We need your help in making Christmas tree ornaments for our bare tree. You can make them or purchase them. The theme is "The Arts." Please see below for details. Please do come to the Holiday House Tour.

We are looking to borrow a large heater to heat the art gallery through the winter so we can continue to work inside. If you have one or know a contractor that will let us borrow one let me know.

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and start working on those tree ornaments.

Sincerely,

Deb Giordano
President of GALA

GALA Needs Ornaments

GALA Needs Ornaments for Our Christmas Tree by Monday, November 27!

We need your help in making or purchasing Christmas tree ornaments for our GALA Tree. The theme is "THE ARTS", so we are looking for ornaments that speak to all of the Arts. A few examples could be: miniature 3"x3" paintings; miniature scrolls of poetry; musical instruments and notes; or cameras; etc. This is a fun holiday project, so use your creativity and imagination!

The Winchendon History and Cultural Center will be holding their 2017 Tour of Holiday Homes on December 9 starting at 10 am. There will be nine holiday decorated homes to visit and a gift shop. The fee is $15 per person.

GALA's eight foot Christmas tree will be in the mansion. This tour is marvelous! So let's make some ornaments for our bare tree! We will then be able to use these ornaments year after year. Make sure you put your name on the ornaments. Please let Deb know that you will be participating so that we have a good idea of how many ornaments we can expect.

We need the ornaments by Monday, November 27! Call Deb Giordano to arrange for drop off at our Arts Gallery or mail them to Deb Giordano, 151 Glenallen Street, Winchendon, MA 01475.

[email protected], 978-407-1419.

Thank you!

Mixed Media Exhibit by Bob Askey
The Jaffrey Civic Center, Jaffrey, NH

The Generals by Bob Askey
The Jaffrey Civic Center is pleased to host a mixed media exhibit by NH artist, Bob Askey. The exhibit will be held in the Auditorium Gallery from Friday, October 13th through November 11th. Bob was born and raised in Salem, Ohio. He exhibited an early interest in art but it was not until he retired that he once again became involved with art. Bob creates both whimsical and serious art in a variety of styles and media. In the past few years, Bob has won many awards in competitive art exhibitions throughout New England ranging from "Best in Show" at Ogunquit, ME Sidewalk Art Exhibit to blue ribbon awards in three different media in various other competitive exhibitions. His work is owned by patrons in over two dozen states. Bob is involved with a number of organizations where his work is exhibited on a regular basis.

"My primary objective as an artist is to have the viewers of my art enjoy the result as much as I enjoyed creating the work. The smiles and chuckles and the occasional oohs and awes are my barometer for judging my success. When viewers react positively with some measure of appreciation my comfort level as an artist soars." -Bob Askey

Waxing into Winter
Gallery Sitka, Fitchburg, MA

Three Encaustics Artists Will Be "Waxing into Winter" with Stunning Colors and Textures at Gallery Sitka in Fitchburg

Reverie by Kellie Weeks
With an opening on Saturday, Nov. 4, three fascinating local artists will present works all in the waxy medium of encaustic, yet each approaching it by way of her own distinctive aesthetic. Each artist has a different take on the possibilities of this remarkable medium.

Painter Kellie Weeks considers herself an abstract, not a representational, artist. Indeed her paintings are dynamic studies of pure color, light, and form. She has spent a number of years experimenting with various media but now is focusing on encaustics, incorporating dry pigments, metal leaf, shellac, and other materials. The medium gives her a means of expression of unsurpassed quality, depth, and brilliancy.

Jeanne Borofsky has a wonderful work ethic: "I like to have fun when I work," she says. "Combining two of my favorite activities-folding origami and painting with wax, I construct images that explore the use and interaction of color with whimsical references to my dreams and fantasies."

Artist and Art Therapist Darcy Schultz defines the ingredients of encaustic very precisely as beeswax, Damar varnish (tree sap), and ground rock pigments. She has been working with the medium for eight years, very happy to be handling a natural, non-toxic material. The word "encaustic," she notes, comes from the Greek and means to "burn in." The beeswax is applied molten and hot. It then cures very quickly and once it's solid another layer can be applied over the first, and so on for as many layers as the particular painting seems to require. Because encaustic is so versatile in creating textures, it takes on form in ways that oil paint never could. (Some artists even use it for sculpture.) Because it is translucent, Ms. Schultz says, it reflects light back in fascinating ways-it "glows."

"Waxing into Winter" will open with a reception at Gallery Sitka, 454 Main Street in Fitchburg, MA, 2 - 4 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 4. The show will run through Sunday, Jan. 7, 2018. Art lovers can access the artists' work on Jeanne Borofsky's dreamingprinter.com, Kellie Weeks' kellieweeksart.com, and Darcy Schultz's darcyartstudio.com.

Artist Statement

"Primarily concerned with painting as process, my paintings seek to describe a perceptual process in and of themselves and become frameworks of potentiality rather than images or objects loaded with a specific meaning. Thinking of Painting in this way, as precursory to contextual specificity, I am afforded the ability to examine contemporary issues from a metaphysical vantage, one of openness, emptiness, and potential."     --Taylor French Benoit, October 2017

Taylor French Benoit is a painter/sculptor currently living and working in South Portland, Maine. After receiving his Bachelor of Fine Art degree from Maine College of Art, his interests in Eastern Psychologies led him west, where he studied Transpersonal Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Now back home in his native New England, Benoit concerns himself with reconciling his psycho-spiritual findings with the process of painting.
