November Q&A: New Barnabas Nassau Snack Pack Program with Tania Yount, Chief Development Officer

This month we're pleased to announce the launch of our new Nassau SnackPack program, which will provide supplemental food to 240 low-income children, ages 5-17, on Fridays during the school year. The children have been identified as the neediest, and are currently homeless or at eminent risk for homelessness.

Why is Barnabas starting the Nassau SnackPack program?
The Nassau SnackPack program addresses the critical issues of childhood hunger and food insecurity in our county. Food insecurity impacts cognitive development among young children and is linked to poorer school performance. These 240 children represent the most vulnerable and economically challenged students in Nassau county's school system.

What will the children receive in their packs each Friday?
The child-friendly SnackPack will include five-eight pounds of food, including pop-top canned fruits and meats, peanut butter, healthy cereal and trail mix bars, low-sodium crackers, soups and always a piece of fresh fruit.

How was this much-needed program funded?
Barnabas developed the Nassau SnackPack program thanks to donations from the Walmart Foundation and Bank of America, and in partnership with Feeding Northeast Florida and the Nassau County School System. To volunteer to help with this program, please contact Lynne Starling, Volunteer Coordinator, at (904) 261-7000 ext. 118.

Holiday Food Drives and Donations Abound ... Thank You!

In addition to the following community food donations that are underway and completed, Barnabas Center will be purchasing food for 500 Thanksgiving bags, which will contain a complete holiday dinner for a family of five. We are very thankful to David's Restaurant for purchasing the turkeys for our Thanksgiving bags! The other contents for the bags were funded by community donations. Bags will be distributed starting November 8. Contact Robert Peck, Food Pantry Coordinator, at
 (904) 261-7000 ext. 121, for more information.

Food Donations Underway

The Amelia Island Plantation Community Association, the Omni Amelia Island Resort and the Amelia Island Club are sponsoring a Thanksgiving Food Drive through Nov. 15. Collection centers for non-perishable food are located at the AIPCA/Castle Group office at 5542 First Coast Hwy, Suite 400; Ocean and Long Point Clubhouses, and Amelia Island Plantation Real Estate office.

The Publix Food Sharing Program provides an opportunity for customers to show they care by donating to those less fortunate. The local Publix program will run from Nov. 3-23, and will benefit Barnabas.

Southside Elementary's One Can food drive continues on Oct. 31 through Nov. 4, and on Dec. 2, as part of the school's monthly spirit day. Students are asked to donate one can of food for the Barnabas Food Pantry on the first Friday of each month, which was extended to five days of giving in November due to the hurricane interruption.

The Amelia Island-Nassau County Association of Realtors is hosting its eighth annual food drive through Nov. 7. Drop off donations at the Association office, 910 S. 14th St., Fernandina Beach.

Feeding Northeast Florida delivers dry and canned dog and cat food as part of our regular weekly food delivery to the Barnabas Food Pantry. We, in turn, donate a portion of the pet foods to Nassau Humane Society for additional distribution. Barnabas understands that pets are important parts of families and can provide great comfort in stressful times.

Thank You For These Recent, Generous Food Donations:

The Northeast Florida Fair Food Drive donated 3,563 pounds of food from fair attendees on Oct. 17. The Rivers Edge Church volunteers, lead by Pastor Gerald Wollitz, helped gather, box and load the food donations.

The Nassau Community Band, a multi-generational community ensemble of 50 musicians, performed at Prince of Peace Church on Oct. 13. Attendees donated 212 pounds of food, which fed eight local families.

Little Women's Group conducted their annual Halloween food drive for Barnabas and delivered more than 222 pounds of food.

Amelia Island Photography collected and donated 167 pounds of canned food on October 31 during their annual Halloween photo event.

Cooking Matters Class Starts Nov. 9

The goal of the program is to help low to moderate income families learn how to prepare affordable meals that are tasty and healthy. Classes are free and fun!
