PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Edronda Guiriba
AFWA - Silicon Valley Chapter President

I was fortunate to attend this year's AFWA National Conference in Denver Colorado from October 26th to October 28th. As always, it was a great networking and learning experience and it was tons of fun!

As a member of the AFWA LEAP Council, which was created by National Headquarters to hear and utilize the voice and opinions of younger professionals within AFWA, I was proud of the Young Professional Program we were able to help put together. This was a half day track that consisted of great speakers and topics such as "Delivering on Your Promise: A Guide to Building a Personal Brand for Success" and "Achievement NOW!" designed for targeting and achieving specific goals.

I was also proud of our past chapter president and past National president, Monika Miles, who received the Women of Influence recognition at the closing ceremony. AFWA's  Women of Influence represent the passionate and respected industry leaders who the organization empowers members to be. Congrats Monika!

I highly encourage members to attend at least one National Conference. It's a great way to connect with members from other chapters, get a great deal on CPE pricing, to travel (next year's conference will be in Washington DC!) and to take full advantage of your membership.

With the holidays approaching, our chapter is holding our annual holiday party. Watch for registration details - I hope to see you there!

2016 Annual Business Meeting Message
Posted November 09, 2016
By AFWA National President, Linda Harris, CPA

_______________________________________________________________

When I was installed as National President in Billings earlier this spring, I challenged the National Board as well as those present to be the change they wish to see in AFWA.  Gandhi was on point when he said that we must be the change we wish to see in the world.

I realize that change is not something that comes easy - but the world has changed dramatically over the 77 years since our organization was founded and I wonder what Ida Broo would think.  I believe if she knew then how important AFWA would be to the women in accounting & finance she would face today's challenges with the same passion and commitment.

Too many seem to classify today's women as those who fought for equal pay and hammered at the glass ceiling or the younger generation of women who are portrayed as taking that all for granted. There is no difference - we are all women who just happen to be at different points in our lives and careers.   Unfortunately some of the same challenges and struggles faced by many of us will be faced by those following in our footsteps.  We all have something to offer each other.  It is not and should not be us vs. them.  That is why a woman-serving organization is so important - that is what AFWA members do so well and need to continue to do.  AFWA is great at building relationships.

5 Ways Managers Can Promote Workplace Happiness
Posted November 09, 2016
By Lisa Amstutz

cocoa_beans_grind.jpg

Monday morning started by going to fill my water bottle in the break room. Someone had placed a Post-it note on the water cooler that read: "You matter!" I'd never seen anything quite like it at the office. I couldn't help but smile. Someone had brightened my day near the finance department where I sit, and I didn't even know who to thank for this inspirational message of workplace happiness.

When was the last time you made an effort to improve the workplace happiness of your finance team? Happy employees are good for business. They are more engaged, loyal and productive.

How Managers Can 'Walk the Talk' Around Work-Life Balance
Posted by Robert Half Finance & Accounting,October 27, 2016

As a manager, you already know about  work-life balance  - perhaps the king of 21 st  century office buzz phrases. If not, it goes something like this: The demands of our finance careers should not override our ability to enjoy a satisfying personal life. When we neglect one in favor of the other, both tend to suffer.
