Beauty by Design | Fashioning the Renaissance

This exhibition questions cultural commonplaces about beauty and body image by linking the renaissance art collections of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and Scottish National Gallery to contemporary fashion.
 

Fashion designers and stylists, Mal Burkinshaw, Claire Ferguson and Sally-Ann Provan with Anne Chaisty, Philip Clarke and Sharon Lloyd will display their work alongside paintings by Paris Bordon & Adam de Colone.
 

Beauty by Design is a result of a partnership collaboration between Edinburgh College of Art and New Media Scotland. It also enjoys the support of Sophie Hallette Lace and All Walks Beyond the Catwalk.

Tricia Allerston of the Scottish National Gallery and Jill Burke and Mal Burkinshaw of Edinburgh College of Art will introduce the Beauty by Design research project which gave rise to the exhibition, focusing on the central theme of body image. The new works created for the exhibition will also be discussed, giving insights into the processes through which they were created. No booking required.

Dialogues | Rei Nakamura

Rei Nakamura uses piano, electronics and video to create performances that examine the interrelationship of movement and sound. She has worked with this concept annually since 2007 and this concert marks the 8th iteration.

 

The programme includes UK premieres of new work by Jos� Rafael Sub�a Valdez, Raquel Garc�a-Tom�s & Ainhoa Sarabia, Alberto Bernal and Christian Winther Christensen plus work by Johannes Kreidler.

NEoN | Coded After Lovelace



Coded After Lovelace offers a survey of art that critically reflects on the creative use of technology, its development and limitations. From the room-sized computers of the Bell Labs era to the tablet-based work of today.

 

The exhibition seeks to bring greater visibility to the work of women artists who have often been left out of histories of art and technology. Coded After Lovelace also creates a new lineage across artists of different generations.
 

Artists include Bureau of Inverse Technology, Carla Gannis, Claudia Hart, Olia Lialina, Lorna Mills, Rosa Menkman, Lillian F Schwartz, Erica Scourti and Cornelia Sollfrank. Curated by Nora O'Murchu and Faith Holland.

Why Don't You? | The Radio and the Commons

This two-day event by mobile hack lab FreeMachines will explore the power of radio in contemporary society, and propose radical ways in which it could be co-opted by the public in the digital age.

 

In the context of the forthcoming digital radio switchover, can we make use of the old public AM/FM radio bands, and turn it into a new commons? Roel Roscam Abbing and Jack James will discuss, and also lead a workshop.

Why Don't You? | IDEEA lab Device Art

Professor Kumiko Kushiyama and her colleagues at Tokyo Metropolitan University's IDEEA (Interaction, Design, Entertainment, Education and Art) lab will lead a series of demonstration workshops in making examples of Device Art practice.

The workshops will be held at both UWS Paisley and Ayr campuses and will be accompanied by an exhibition of IDEEA lab's multisensory artworks on 26th November at GSA Digital Design Studio at The Hub, Pacific Quay, Glasgow G51 1EA.

gap in the air is a celebration of experimental music and sonic art. The programme is dedicated to the experience of sound. Over four months this accessible overview of an expanding field will be a live testing ground for new and innovative ideas.

 

gap in the air spans four thematic seasons: place, reach, orientation and nature. In this concert renowned experimental saxophonist Michel Doneda celebrates his 60th birthday in the context of 'place' with free improvisation collective Edimpro.

Alt-w | SSA Annual Exhibition 2014

Each year the Society of Scottish Artists holds an annual contemporary open exhibition. For the first time New Media Scotland will be guest curating a room at the RSA of artwork produced by Alt-w Fund alumni.
 

~ in the fields will present 'ink' (2009) which was awarded the 2010 UdK Award for Interdisciplinary Art and Science. This device art installation was first commissioned to celebrate 500 years of printing in Scotland.
 

The Fallen Oak (2006) by Chris Rowland is a three dimensional 'fly past' of the HMS Royal Oak, the first battleship to be sunk in WWII after being torpedoed by a German U-boat with the loss of 833 sailors at Scapa Flow, Orkney in October 1939.
 

Following an Alt-w Ginsberg residency, Blipfoto present an image taken by Jackie Solaiman of her son Rafi taken after he'd recovered from a serious brain haemorrhage. The Blip community supported her, as she documented his recovery.
 

Gina Czarnecki's 'Palaces' (2011) is a unique arts-science project that has grown over time like a cluster of stalagmites or coral, to form a fantastical castle structure created using donations of milk teeth from the public.
