Throughout the late summer and early fall the earth gives us much - fresh fruits and vegetables, nut and berries, and beautiful fall foliage. It truly is the season for giving. During our Universal Campaign we are heartened by the many employees who give to others. With our new Volunteer Coordinator, Patti Cameron, on board we continue to appreciate our Volunteers, Mentors and Tutors who give freely to our faculty, staff and students. And even ol' Uncle Sam gets into the giving spirit by offering a tax deduction for charitable giving! Keep in mind: it's a great time to consider your end of the year giving to the Foundation and it's a perfect time to establish your goals for planned giving to the College's Foundation.
We are pleased that an array of Foundation Scholarships are being awarded to students attending spring semester classes, with the application deadline being
Monday, November 30 (click here to learn more)
. For the 2016-17 academic year, the scholarship application process will open in January.
Thank you for partnering with the Foundation so that we may be a true resource for others!
Sincerely,
Sue H Olesiuk Executive Director

Thank You To Our 2016 Universal Campaign Donors!
|
We'd like to start by sending a much deserved and heartfelt thank you to all of our A-B Tech family for their support of the
Universal Campaign! For anyone who may not be familiar with this annual A-B Tech tradition, the Universal Campaign is our year-long employee giving effort. Each year, A-B Tech employees come together to pledge monthly support to three organizations serving our community:
The A-B Tech Foundation,
United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County, and the Employee Emergency Fund through
Eblen Charities. We're excited to announce that for 2016, 150 of our coworkers have already pledged or contributed over $45,000 combined to these three worthy organizations! This is a huge collective impact for our students, college, and community, and it truly speaks to the culture of generosity that exists on our campus - we can not stress that enough.
We hope you'll take a minute to hear from some of our students on what this support means by watching our campaign video!
Thank you to all of our A-B Tech coworkers for what you do for our students! With pledge forms still coming in through the end of the year, we know that this campaign will continue to serve as an important resource for our community throughout the coming year.

Alumni Spotlight on Philip Cooper
|
We're constantly impressed at how many of our alumni choose to continue their professional careers at A-B Tech after graduating. One such alumnus is Philip Cooper, Administrative Assistant for Student Advising and Support Services.
A former recipient of both the
Lead the Way Scholarship and the
Grace Joan Love Schneider Scholarship through the A-B Tech Foundation, Philip graduated from A-B Tech in 2013 with a degree in Human Services Technology. After working for a while as a substance abuse counselor, Philip ended up returning to A-B Tech to work with the Student Services Office. He is currently pursuing his bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems, working through A-B Tech's Transfer Program with Western Carolina University.
Philip is quick to credit the many staff and faculty members who encouraged and believed in him while he was a student, helping him to set realistic goals academically and in life and to always improve. In particular, he points to the support and guidance of
Dr. Joseph Fox, retired Chair of A-B Tech's Business Administration Program and Founder of A-B Tech's
Minority Student Leadership Academy. As Philip describes, Dr. Fox saw potential in him during a management course that he took. Through his involvement with the Minority Student Leadership Academy, he was able to work more closely with Dr. Fox and he cites him as an important mentor, life coach, and influence on his life.
Perhaps because of this experience, Philip is motivated to be an inspiration for the students that he interacts with every day, providing the same encouragement that he felt from so many while he attended A-B Tech. He now serves as a mentor to students in the Minority Student Leadership Academy, with a special focus on helping students address the challenges of re-entry following incarceration. He also currently mentors two students at Asheville High School.
In recognition of his work, Philip was recently awarded a
2042 ASCORE Leadership Award from the Center for Diversity Education at UNC Asheville. Named for the year projected by demographers that ethnic and racial minority groups will comprise a majority of the U.S. population, this award program recognizes the work of five young adults who exemplify the characteristics that made ASCORE and ASCORE members so successful.
The awards and recognition have been nice, but as Philip puts it, what he celebrates the most is seeing the students he works with succeed.
