OAKVILLE STITCHERY GUILD

 October 18 to November 24

The Oakville Stitchery Guild is celebrating its 40th Anniversary (1973-2013) at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre.

The reviews are in and the opening a resounding success. The Gallery is filled with a wealth of hand created pieces of art. You can only imagine the time and heart that went into each and every creation.

Recently mysterious packages wrapped in brown paper surfaced. The unwrapping revealed five panels created by the guild in 1977. The panels portray Oakville in 1802, 1830, 1860, 1890 and 1977 and are on display in the OSG Guild Exhibition. Discussion for panel number six for Oakville 2014 has been initiated.

With four decades of embroidery in Canada, we are making history. Our work now the inspiration for others to follow.

LOUISE LAROCHE SOLO EXHIBITION

December 1, 2013 - January 12, 2014

Opening Tea Party

Sunday December 1, 2-5

Offerings is a solo exhibition by Joshua Creek's resident artist, Louise Laroche. The Gallery dates will span the Christmas and New Year season.

Louise's work is evocative with roots in the ancient culture of 16th century Quebec. She draws inspiration from nature and her surroundings. Louise is a graduate of Fine Art, Laval University and has spent the last 20 years searching  for her own pathway of printmaking, guided by her passion for fragmentation.

A special invitation to "Meet the artist" will be extended to the Friends of Joshua Creek on December 8th. Stay tuned for details.

WHAT'S NEW AT JCHAC

JCHAC LEGACY

Sybil Rampen

With Sybil's assistance each month we would like to add factoids of Joshua Creek so that we all may have a deeper understanding of it's heritage and evolution into the oasis we enjoy today. "Our intent is to honor the pioneers who once lived here. JCHAC is an oasis, breathing space as the urbanization of  Oakville accelerates."whatsnew

For this issue Sybil was asked to share a story of life on the land. One event that came quickly to mind involved the tending to all the animals that made their home at Joshua Creek; chickens, goats, cattle, horses and sheep. She smiled as she recalled  the time she had to go in search of black angus cattle that had jumped the gate and were now free roaming on the road. First to thought was how the cows could jump the gate and then how was she ever going to locate and herd black angus cows in the darkness of night. AS she pondered and search the solution became evident. It was in the eyes, big yellow eyes glaring at her. Using her best communication skills she was able to guide the escapees back to the gate and home.

SCHOOL OUTING TO JOSHUA CREEK

What better a place to learn the ecology of a pond than Joshua Creek. A local school took the opportunity to take the class to nature's classroom to view first hand the ecology of a pond. Given the gratitude letters that followed the trip it was a success.

If you have a school group who benefit from hands on education and experience on the property of Joshua Creek please contact Bill Hewitt.

TREE SANCTUARY

Upon learning several magestic mature trees, maple and blue and white spruce may be destroyed if not relocated, Sybil offered them a safe haven under her care and the sanctuary of Joshua Creek.

A grove of trees are now forming on the perimeter of the parking area.

FUTURE GALLERY EXHIBITIONS

Gallery We are presently taking proposals for future exhibitions in the Art Gallery. JCHAC Gallery is the home to ten shows each year with each exhibition running for one month to six weeks. The focus of the Gallery is to be a venue for emerging artists. Should a showing by a single artist seem daunting consider an exhibition of a collective of three or four artists.

We look forward to hearing from you and discussing opportunities. Please contact Bill Hewitt for more information.

TEA TIME AT JOSHUA CREEK

An invitation is extended to interested groups who are considering looking for a spot to gather and enjoy some "tea time" in a welcoming and engaging atmosphere. Of special interest are residents in retirement communities looking for a meaningful and fun outing to this extraordinary land where the city is forgotten and the country feels like coming home.

Please contact Bill Hewitt for more information.
