Message from the Administrator

Dear Friends:

It has always been the mission of the Home to help our residents live life to the fullest.  This often means advocating on their behalf and creating avenues to feel that this is truly their Home and not an "institution."  Sharing a similar mission, the District of Columbia has an appointed Ombudsman who serves as an advocate for residents living in all of the long-term care facilities in DC.  The Home has often worked with the Ombudsman to assure quality services and to maximize each resident's care.  Recently, the Ombudsman's office was approached by a representative of the Federal Administration for Community Living (ACL) which focuses on meeting the unique needs of older adults, including sharing U.S. resources with its international counterparts.  The Ombudsman turned to the LLDH Home as her first choice when advised that a delegation from Singapore wanted to visit a local facility to learn more about how we provide medical, social, and other functional services to aging residents of the community.

It was a great honor to be selected and, on November 1st, the delegation, led by the Singapore Minister for Health, toured the Home and engaged with us in a thoughtful, open discussion about our mission of service to the city's elder low income residents. We further learned about delivery of services to the elders of Singapore.

It was truly a professional and personal honor to see the Home singled out among all of the long term care facilities in DC to share our story and to show, first-hand, the quality of compassionate care that makes us so special.

Subsequent to the visit, I received an email "thank you" from the representative of the ACL in which she described the Home as a "...wonderful jewel...in NW DC serving our most vulnerable."  The delegation expressed its gratitude for our opening the Home's doors to them for such a worthwhile visit. They also presented us with a lovely landscape of Singapore crafted out of wood. It was so wonderful to be able to assist others in a far off place in considering how to best serve the needs of their elder population.  I cannot tell you how proud I am, once again, of the work we do at the Home.

All the best,
Sue

Department of Health Care Finance, Division of Long Term Care, Beneficiary Fair

On October 20, the LLDH Home was pleased to be a participant in the first annual Department of Health Care Finance, Division of Long Term Care, Beneficiary Fair. The event gathered together providers of Medicaid-supported home and community based services such as personal care agencies, adult day programs and assisted living facilities.  DC Department on Aging staff, as well as Medicaid benefit specialists, were also available to discuss the many programs sponsored by the District to assist elders or persons with disabilities.  Lisa Harfoot, the LLDH Home's Director of Social Services, was there to promote our assisted living, one of only 3 in the District that provides Medicaid-subsidized assisted living.  Lisa had a great day talking with potential new residents and partner providers.  We hope to participate annually in this great new event!

Community Fun Fest at the Home

Residents and staff of the Home enjoying the festivities

Let the fun begin!  Our annual Community Fun Fest (formerly Community Zoo Day) was held on Saturday, October 29th from 11am to 2pm on the grounds of the Home. The weather was perfect, our visiting ponies and baby animals were on their best behavior, and many residents enjoyed the sunshine, laughter and good times!

Staff Flu Shot Campaign for 2016-2017

The 2016-2017 flu season has begun.  According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), it's not possible to predict what this flu season will be like, however; while the flu spreads every year, the time, severity, and length of the season varies from one year to another.  In the United States, flu viruses begin to increase in October and November and peak between December and March.  The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone 6 months of age and older as the first and most important step in protecting against this serious disease.  Take everyday preventive actions such as staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs.  If you are sick with the flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading the flu to others.

As the influenza vaccine is recommended for all health care workers in DC,  the Home asks all employees to receive the flu shot.  This year Jackie Saint-Amour, Assistant Director of Nursing, organized the staff flu shot campaign and gave a big congratulations to those Departments that have achieved 100% compliance on receiving their flu shots!
