DEER FESTIVAL NEWS

The 48th Annual Deer Festival was ready - set - go with weather predictions in the high 50's with wind 13 mph and sunny skies and boy were we in for a surprise.  This year's festival will surely go down in our festival weather history with 31 mph gusts of wind and low 50's.  The exhibitors trying to set up were met with gusts that blew their tents upside down and inside out.  It blew their merchandise off their tables and onto the streets, destroying what they had prepared for the show.   We could not even set up the chairs in the entertainment area for fear they would get picked up and blown into the crowd.  Exhibitors did not show because of the weather and over half of them had to take their damaged goods and tents down and leave before the festival even got started.   It looked like we could have been filming a zombie movie!  It certainly was an unexpected change to a year of planning.

We were proud to watch those who came to support the festival in brutal conditions and we were even more proud of the volunteers who "weathered" it out.  It takes a year to prepare for the festival with countless volunteers and volunteer hours.  The Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors would like to thank everyone who proudly volunteered this year to help with this traditional event that was started by the Jaycees in 1966.  They had a vision for our community to have an annual festival we all could support and participate in - even when the conditions are not perfect.   Come join our team and volunteer this year and help us present the 49th year on November 7, 2015.  Let us all proudly continue this tradition with community pride and support.

The 49th Annual Deer Festival date has been set for November 7, 2015
