WDI Board Chair Dave Spetrino invited leaders of downtown organizations to attend a Downtown Summit, held October 27 at Level 5 City Stage. Participating panelists were Kim Czuprynski - Wilmington Harbor Enhancement Trust (WHET), Dave Spetrino - WDI, Donn Ansell - Thalian Association, Randy Shackelford - Residents of Old Wilmington (ROW), George Edwards - Historic Wilmington Foundation (HWF), Tom Harris - Front Street Brewery/Do It Downtown, Chris Andrews - Cool Wilmington, George Gardner - Downtown Churches, Rick Lawson - The Children's Museum, Rob Kaiser - Cape Fear Futures, and Ray Worrell - Association of Bar Owners and Restaurants Downtown (ABOARD). Facilitator Mark Ward gave introductions prior to a brief PowerPoint presentation on The Value of Downtown given by Executive Director John Hinnant and Dave Spetrino of WDI. Members of the audience were asked to rank a number of downtown projects/initiatives in order of importance. The #1 ranked project was Security/Police Presence, which the group plans to tackle first. Audience members were also given an opportunity to write questions for panelists to answer. Although not all questions were answered during the panel, responses will be given via email to remaining questions.

WDI was formed in 1977 as a public/private partnership between New Hanover County and the City of Wilmington, with the remainder of the organization's funding coming from private donations. Less than 1/3 of our funds come from the city and county combined. Our total budget is $300,000 and office salary stays below 1/3 of the overall budget. We remain good stewards of the public trust and we do not operate in the red. For the upcoming year, we plan to concentrate our efforts on the following initiatives:
  • Developing Incentives for Historic Preservation
  • Improving Management of Nightlife Issues
  • Implementing a Downtown Ambassador Program
  • Establishing new park space in the CBD
  • Retail & Office Recruitment
  • Business Retention
  • Better collaboration with our Economic Development partners in the region
