Dear Friends of the BABC,  
 
As we transition from Summer to Fall, the BABC continues to maintain a busy schedule of events and activities, here is a recap of the past month:
 
On Tuesday, October 10th we hosted our increasingly popular Young Professionals Happy Hour in Cafe Americano at Hotel Vitale.  As ever, the YP Committee was delighted to welcome more than 35 new and returning attendees to this monthly networking event.  This month's guests represented a variety of industries including tech, real estate, law, interior design, education, as well as representatives from Rugby related organizations from all over the globe. 
 
Later in the week, on October 12th, we held the 'Women influencing the Built Environment' event at Herman Miller's showroom in the Financial District. Guests enjoyed the stylistic flair of the office - a perfect backdrop for the event - our thanks to you Herman Miller and Cecilia Lyra. The sold out evening- standing room only - was attended by over 70 guests from a broad spectrum of professional backgrounds, all eager to hear the Panelists described how they figured out their specializations in Commercial Real Estate (CRE) and how they keep up with training, certifications and trends. The speakers also shared their views on the biggest opportunities and challenges for women considering working in the industry as well as the challenges they themselves faced over the years and how they overcame them.  A huge thank you to our panelists, attendees and of course to our Sponsors Turner & Townsend Trestle, SVN QAV & Associates, our Media Partners San Francisco Business Times and Crew SF, and our hosts Herman Miller.
 
Toward the end of the month, on October 24th 2017 the BABC Young Professionals hosted their second Workshop for 2017, titled "Winning - Strategies for effective Leadership and Management". Kindly sponsored by OFX and Assay Advisory, the event was a sell out! This workshop provided an interesting mix of audience participation, group work and vocalized techniques from Adrian Bray of Assay Advisory. It provided attendees tools to proactively manage both their careers and their staffs, making them more confident in their leadership and management abilities. A huge thanks to our host sponsors OFX, Adrian Bray and Assay Advisory, as well as all attendees who brought a positive and engaging attitude with them to evening.

From The Consul General's Desk


Dear Friends and Members of the BABC,
 
Words cannot express my sorrow and sympathy to those affected by the devastating fires in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino and many other counties in Northern California last month. It is my hope that none of the community within the BABC was personally affected, but I recognize that is hard to imagine given that many of us have a memory or a connection to the beautiful area.
 
Personally, I was in Calistoga just hours before the events began and though my family and I were able to get out safely, I know many were not so lucky. It's with that knowledge and connection that I felt compelled to volunteer the following weekend to assist recovery efforts in any way I could, which brought me to the Red Cross in Santa Rosa. On the ground, the Red Cross is working tirelessly to assist those displaced and accept the generous donations from communities across the state. The operation was truly remarkable.
 
Which brings me to my main point of this month's column: being prepared. Some of the work we do at the Consulate is related to crisis and crisis preparedness. So rest assured, behind the scenes we are making connections with emergencies services teams throughout the state, first responders - including police, fire and the coast guard - but our work can only go so far.
 
The fires in wine county should serve as a good reminder to us all to check our own emergency kits and truly understand how prepared we are for natural disasters. While we live in a place of beauty, there is also the real threat of a crisis happening. The Red Cross has great resources to help you prepare including how to create a plan for your family during a crisis and ensure you have the proper materials in your kit.

This week's big news is that the Irish High Court has decided, in the case of Data Protection Commission v Facebook Ireland & Schrems, to kick into the long grass of the CJEU, the politically loaded question of whether the use of the EU Model Clauses by Facebook in relation to the transfer of personal data outside of the EEA is legal, and - more broadly - whether those EU Model Clauses are valid.

Rugby World Cup Sevens Volunteer Program

Finlay James opens in San Francisco

BAB Welcomes Prime Minister Theresa May's Speech in Florence



BritishAmerican Business (BAB) welcomes Prime Minister Theresa May's speech in Florence, stating, however, that on Brexit there is still a long way to go for businesses to feel the clarity they need.

Speaking on the Prime Minister's remarks, Wendy Mendenhall, BAB Global Executive in Charge, said: "The transatlantic business community welcomed today's speech by the UK Prime Minister in Florence, Italy, which emphasized the UK's commitment to address global challenges and its willingness to build on the foundations the UK laid within a successful EU".

October 2017 was yet another busy month for all who work in or with the transatlantic business community.

The UK is running short of time to persuade the EU the future UK-EU trade relationship should be part of the ongoing negotiations, especially since crucial settlement issues have yet to be resolved.

In the US, while business would like to see quick progress on the Administration's efforts on tax reform, time continues to be lost to further political escapades. In both countries, governing parties seem to be more divided than ever, making it even harder to predict what may come next.
