The Rothko Chapel's November public programs start this Wednesday.  At noon, Joseph Newland leads a Sufi meditation.  At 7pm, in partnership with Trinity University, Elisa Massimino of Human Rights First examines the global status of women's human rights. 
  
Early next week Congregation Beth Israel Cantor Daniel Mutlu leads a twilight contemplative service. 
  
On Thursday, November 14, nationally renowned consultant Cindy Wigglesworth explores notions of spiritual intelligence and the quest for human nobility. 
  
Led by faith leaders from the Bah�'�, Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh and Zoroastrian traditions, the annual Houston Interfaith Thanksgiving Service is held on Thursday, November 21.  
  
Weekly Tai Chi and Yoga classes continue throughout the month.
  
And as always, the Rothko Chapel will be open from 10am to 6pm every day as a tranquil sanctuary where all are welcome.

Twelve Moments of Spirituality and Healing: Sufi Meditation with Joseph Newland

Participants use breath practices, new frontiers of cosmology, the art of light, and light on art to enter into meditation. Joseph Newland is a long-time meditator who has sat with various groups, and in 1981 became a student of Pir Vilayat Inayat Khan. A representative of the Sufi Order International, he is a lover of light, a believer in the unity of religious ideals, and especially fond of the epiphany of the everyday.

Women around the world face unique challenges to the full enjoyment of their fundamental rights. Whether they are activists in Cairo, teachers in Afghanistan, teenagers forcibly trafficked into prostitution, or refugees fleeing sexual violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo, women are both uniquely vulnerable-and uniquely powerful-in the struggle for human rights. Elisa Massimino leads a conversation focused on why Human Rights First is launching a special initiative on women's rights to leverage American global leadership. Elisa Massimino is the President and Chief Executive Officer of Human Rights First, one of the nation's leading human rights advocacy organizations. As a national authority on human rights law and policy, she has testified before Congress dozens of times and writes frequently for mainstream publications and specialized journals, including New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, and USA Today. She has also been featured on ABC News, NBC Dateline, The Newshour with Jim Lehrer, MSNBC, CNN, National Public Radio, BBC and many other news outlets. Massimino serves as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center, where she teaches human rights advocacy. A reception on the plaza follows the program.

Tai Chi is a traditional Chinese martial art whose physical practice offers general health benefits, stress management, increased energy, and improved physical mobility.  The classes are suitable for beginners as well as the experienced Tai Chi practitioner. Loose fitting, comfortable clothes are appropriate attire.  In case of inclement weather, classes will be held inside the Rothko Chapel. Henderson Smith is the founder of Living Well Therapies and is a certified instructor in Tai Chi.

Yoga on the Plaza provides an opportunity for participants to connect with their body and breath while enjoying the calm-invoking atmosphere of the Reflecting Pool on the grounds of the Rothko Chapel.  Instructors from Bayou Bliss Yoga will lead a 60-minute invigorating practice of yoga postures (Hatha). This practice focuses on building strength and flexibility through a sequence of flowing postures, followed by meditation. Bring a towel, yoga mat, and water. The event will be canceled in case of inclement weather.

Congregation Beth Israel Cantor Daniel Mutlu leads a contemplative practice of Jewish worship music. Mutlu earned a Masters in Sacred Music from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York City and was invested into the Cantorate in 2008. Mutlu also served as Professor of Traditional Nusach at Hebrew Union College. An avid composer and arranger, Mutlu has also premiered original works in Boston, Jerusalem, and New York. He has sung with a number of premier musical organizations and houses of worship, most notably with the Trinity Choir Wall Street where he received two glowing musical reviews from the New York Times for solo performances. He may be heard on the recently released Naxos eight-disc set of The Complete Haydn Masses. 
Spiritual Intelligence and Leadership: The Quest for Human Nobility

Or to effective personal and professional leadership? Consultant and author Cindy Wigglesworth delves into these questions and more. After working for 20 years in a Fortune 50 company in human resources, Cindy Wigglesworth formed her own company and is the author of SQ21: The Twenty-One Skills of Spiritual Intelligence, a blogger for Huffington Post, a recognized expert in the field of spiritual intelligence, and an experienced leadership coach and corporate consultant. A book signing and reception on the plaza follows the program.
Houston Interfaith Thanksgiving Service

This annual service brings together leaders and members of nine faiths to offer prayers of thanksgiving and read sacred texts on thankfulness. All are welcome. A reception on the plaza follows the program.

Evolving Dharma: Meditation, Buddhism, and the Next Generation of Enlightenment with Jay Michaelson

With new findings in meditation's proven benefits to physical and mental health, a major trend is occurring in "contemplative fitness" in healthcare, corporate, religious and educational settings. A "next generation" book on meditation, Buddhism, and the path of awakening, Evolving Dharma explores how meditation has moved from exotic spiritual practice to a secular spiritual "technology." A leader in the "BuJus" (Buddhist Jews) community, Jay Michaelson, is a scholar, author, featured columnist for public media, and on the Forward 50 list of influential American Jews.
