Severe Weather & School Closings
A primary goal of WAWM personnel is to protect the safety and well being of students. If severe weather conditions develop, a decision to close will be made only after carefully considering a number of factors. The timing of the decision is influenced by the severity, intensity, and movement of the storm center. If the District is considering closing school due to bitter cold and wind chill, it will do so if the National Weather Service changes a wind chill advisory to a wind chill warning. A decision to close will be made as early as possible, preferably by 6:00 a.m., so that students, parents, and staff members can be informed promptly. Mindfulness in Our Schools
The West Allis-West Milwaukee School District is providing Mindfulness training for all staff and students through funding from the School Climate Transformation Grant. Staff training will be complete throughout the district by the end of the 2018-2019 school year.  All students in 4K-12th grade continue to receive lessons in Mindfulness through Social Emotional Learning (SEL) classes.  West Milwaukee Intermediate School and Shared Journeys were the first to be trained and implementing Mindfulness.

United Way Campaign
This fall, our campaign involved reaching out to district staff, teachers, students, community members, and City of West Allis employees. Many of our staff and students participated in "A Special Day for United Way" by doing a high-interest, fun activity to raise funds for our campaign. Our total contribution was $13,088, up 30 percent from last year! We are thankful to everyone that selected the West Allis-West Milwaukee School District Education Foundation when contributing to the United Way. The funds raised greatly benefit the teachers and students in our schools!
CPR and First Aid Training
CPR saves lives. It is one of those skills that everybody should know, and it can really change someone’s life. Every year students at Shared Journeys participate in CPR and basic first aid training. This is a valuable training for students as many are parents to young children. It has also opened doors for employment by sufficing job requirements
PTA/SEPTA Update
Fundraising is not the sole purpose of the PTA, although it is completely necessary since each local unit is a self supporting non-profit. The WAWM PTA Council has one big fundraiser in February. Not only do we celebrate PTA Founders Day it also provides the funds that we need to provide training and support to the local units. This year's theme will be Super Heroes. We can't wait to see you on Sunday, February 12, 2017 from 12:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.

SEPTA is off to a great start this school year. We recently had a very successful fundraiser and continue to help our special education PTA grow. Our next meeting will be November 16, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. in the Irving Elementary School Library.

Embracing School Community at WMIS
West Milwaukee Intermediate School (WMIS) demonstrates compassion, community and character in many ways every day.  This year, the school community has risen to embrace and support a seventh grade student who is facing life head on. On July 23, 2016, Austyn was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer. He has had several surgeries and is undergoing extensive chemotherapy and radiation. Austyn is facing a long, tough road ahead.

The WMIS community has been working to support Austyn and his family. Students and staff have worked to raise funds to help with the medical care and special supplies Austyn needs during his fight. Click here to read more.
