Rabbi's Message
Jerry Cutler
T he Methodist Miracle on Wilshire

As soon as the debacle began to unfold and we agreed that we had to abandon Beverly Hills for the holidays, Jeff the Juggernaut  (or, the Just) and Jerry the Rabble Rousing Rabbi went into high gear. Jeff brought up the age-old Jewish refrain, "Tell me, where can we go?"

Rabbi Jerry had an idea, "Let's call Chelsea's friend Nathan who teaches voice and music at the Westwood Hills Christian Church on Le Conte."

Unfortunately, the church couldn't accommodate us but Nathan suggested the United Westwood Methodist Church on Wilshire and Warner....and, he just had lunch with the Pastor's son.

"Good idea," said Jeff and echoed by Jackie Bonds, the Vatican's personal representative to the Jews of Creative Arts Temple.

Nathan called, they called, we called, they called again, Nathan called again, Jackie called the Pope's private number. Finally, we said "Enough with the calling."

We took fate into our own hands as Rosh Hashana was three days away and followed Jeff to the church. We entered the chapel and were speechless.  It was the most beautiful, awe inspiring chapel we had ever seen. "What do we do now?" Jackie asked.

"Pray that we get it?" Jeff answered.

We went to the office of the woman in charge of administration, Kathy Canon who is, hands down, the warmest, cordial, charming, jovial and welcoming person. She made us feel so good that if they turned us down, we wouldn't have felt that bad.

She then introduced us to the senior Pastor, John Woodley and the associate Pastor, Chris Spearman. They were the cream in our coffee.

WE WERE IN. The Creative Arts Temple found a new home and together with our new cantor, Paul Dorman (that's another story for another time....and, what a story it is!) we will have a great New Year's service.

And, indeed we did.   Thanks to a group of good people living the credo of 'reaching out to those in need - especially at a most sacred time in their lives - it was our best High Holiday service ever.

It was, as they used to say in the 1920's, "The CAT's Meow!"

Tashlich

"Tashlich" means "casting off" in Hebrew and involves symbolically casting off the sins of the previous year by tossing pieces of bread into a body of flowing water. To celebrate "Tashlich," CAT went to Mother's Beach in Marina Del Rey. And below are photos to prove it!

Arne's Corner

The U.S. and Israel have signed a deal that will provide $38 Billion in aid to Israel.

One provision of the new deal is.........all the money must be spent in the U.S. (unlike previous deals, where some of the funds are converted to Shekels and directed to Israel's burgeoning  defense industry). No more of that.
               (2) prohibits Congress to appropriate any additional funding to Israel. This proviso is unprecedented, and seen as an attempt to shift power from Congress to the White House.
Imagine the consequences, if Israel is drawn into another war.

If you remember, the Iran Nuclear Deal, unanimously rejected by Republicans and endorsed by 85% of the Democrats, 1/4 of whom boycotted PM Netanyahu's address to the joint session of Congress including Tim Kaine, HRC's current running mate.

Girl on a Train
by Rabbi Jerry Ram Cutler

review

How do I begin?
Let's see......one of the most successful novels of the past few years has come to the silver screen.

Admittedly, I read only the first few chapters of Paula Hawkins's book " The Girl On  the Train" and was immediately hooked by her intriguing and finger nail-biting chapters. I put the book down, as I knew it was destined to be a movie and being a reviewer of films I would prefer to see the finished project without knowing the end.

With great anticipation, I saw the movie earlier this week and was immersed in the plot from the outset. One of my favorite stars, Emily Blunt, was incredibly convincing as the "girl" who had a severe drinking problem, a split and broken marriage, an emotional scar as wide as the Hudson River and a consuming curiosity destined to bring unforeseen danger that lurked ahead.

Sitting in a window seat on a train traveling between Manhattan and upstate New York (a change from the London setting) that passes houses situated on the bank of the Hudson is Rachel (Blunt) who once lived there with her ex, Tom (Justin Therouz). On the balcony of one home she notices a very sexy and buxom Megan passionately kissing a man other than her husband. A few days later Megan disappears.

Great opening, wouldn't you say?

That's exactly what I thought when I watched the story unfold in the dark abyss of a theatre on a large vibrant screen. Soon, there was a flashback. And then, another.    And then, another. There were about 47 flashbacks (okay, it only seemed to be that many) in order to give the moviegoer a touch of the back-story to enhance the suspense. Instead, what it accomplished was to totally confuse those who didn't read the entire book, like me.
Also, I was confused as to who was Megan and who was Anna, Tom's current wife as both are buxom blondes. To make things more confusing, Anna and Tom's infant child had been cared for by Megan who suddenly quit one day leaving the bewildered Anna without a baby sitter.

At first I thought the buxom babes were the same blonde.  Interesting concept but, alas, nothing to do with the picture I am reviewing.  Unfortunately, they were two different BB's..... I think..... but you needed a super sleuth like Philip Marlowe to tell the difference.

Now for the positive aspects of  "The Girl On the Train." Emily Blunt and a cameo appearance by Lisa  Kudrow who plays a pivotal role in the mystery.
