What's on your to-do list?

As you wrap up fall-season tasks for your customers, here are some proactive tasks to work on for a strong start to 2017:

Fill any remaining openings in 2016's schedule.
Got room to squeeze in more work?   Pick up the phone!   You'll be surprised how many sales you can close just by calling and checking in.   Even if you don't make a sale, a check-in call reinforces business next season.   Now is a great time to be selling holiday decor and landscape lighting.

Get going on contract renewals.
Being proactive locks in the business early. Client communication is important year-round, but is especially critical at decision-making time.

Invest your 2016 profits wisely.
Set aside dollars to fund winter projects. Whether you need a better website, an improved employee recruiting program or new software, now is the time to allocate dollars and engage vendors.  By starting now, you will be certain to be ready for next spring.

Let us know how we can help you have a great finish to your season.

Problem Employees- Should They Stay or Go?

Business owners have all had to experience the agony of what to do with a problem team member.  Should we fire the person or give him/her another chance?   Are we doing the right things to help them adjust to our organization?

Often team members "fire themselves" with lack of commitment, bad behavior and poor results. But in other cases, their managers don't take the right actions to help them be successful.

Here are some questions you can ask to decide whether you've taken the right steps:

1)  Does the employee understand your expectations?  Each team member deserves a clear definition of what's required and how success is measured.

2)  Have you provided necessary coaching? Simply laying out instructions is not enough.  You've got to help them through the steps - and often more than once.  Personal attention may be required for specific skills or issues.

3)  Does he or she have the willingness and the ability? Don't confuse these.  Often we hire an employee with the skills, but this employee will actually lack the real desire to adapt to the job.  If the employee is unwilling to engage with training and refuses to participate in the company's vision, that can't be fixed with coaching.

Be as objective as possible and ask these questions when deciding what to do.  Invest your training time in those who will become valued members of your team.

Finish the Year Strong

Having a profitable year is ultimately determined by how much in sales you produce and bill out in the 4th quarter.

Succeeding at business is akin to winning a long distance sprint. You have to get a quick jump off the starter-blocks, accelerate quickly to your top speed, and sprint through the finish line. It is the final sprint that wins the race. Here are 14 ways to sprint through the finish line and end on a profitable note.
