We're sure you're feeling the same way, but is it really November already?! Time is just flying by and at JFS we have been busy tutoring, socializing with elders in the community, assisting with medical appointments and so much more! In this month's newsletter you'll meet one of our great Patient Navigator's, learn some fun facts about corporate giving, learn about upcoming activities and more!
Volunteer Spotlight

Name: Merrill Adler
Occupation: Social Worker
Time with JFS: 1 year
Volunteer Position: Patient Navigator

Merrill joined JFS as a Patient Navigator last fall and helps with both assisting clients with medical appointments and office logistics. She had heard about the concept while she was working in healthcare and thought it sounded like something she would be interested in after she retired. When asked what she likes about the program she said, "I appreciate the opportunity to still be connected to 'helping people' in such a valuable program." She also likes the ability to have some ongoing contact with clients and meet new people. In her spare time she likes to read, go to the movies, theater, spend time at the beach, traveling, and cooking!

Merrill, you are such a great asset to the Patient Navigator team and JFS. You're kind heart and willingness to take on new roles is amazing. Thanks so much for all that you do for JFS!
Giving In Numbers

Does your business offer paid volunteer time? What about corporate volunteer events? Or matching gifts?  Lots of businesses are seeing the value in working with community agencies.

The Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy releases a report each year with the trends in corporate community engagement and we thought we'd share some fast facts with you.

  • Giving grew for 64% of companies between 2010 and 2013, and it increased by more than 10% for 52% of companies.
  • 76% of companies are measuring and tracking the societal outcomes and/or impacts of their investments and starting to use the data to inform their core programs.
  • 59% of companies provided paid-release time volunteer programs in 2013, up from 51% in 2010.
  • 50% of companies provided pro bono service programs in 2013, up from 34% in 2010.

All data pulled from the Giving in Numbers report found here.  If you're interested in seeing how your business can partner with JFS, please reach out, we'd love to talk to you more about it!
T-Shirts & Hours
331 hours were donated to the Metrowest community during the month of October! That's an impressive number! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to that total! If you are not tracking your own hours (excluding Patient Navigators and Wilson Mentors), we can show you how so that we can get an even more accurate number!

Program Spotlight
Healthy Harvest - Reducing Achievement Gaps

Healthy Harvest is a fresh fruit and vegetable distribution that began in 2010 to support the larger Reducing Achievement Gaps initiative at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School.
Healthy HarvestReducing Achievement Gaps is a holistic and multi-dimensional approach to remediate the academic under performance of poor children in an immigrant community.  Through tutoring and mentoring, Reducing Achievement Gaps promotes children's academic success. Through parental support and empowerment, and by helping families meet basic needs, Reducing Achievement Gaps bolsters family stability.

Healthy Harvest is just one component to this
comprehensive program which provides 80 families with a bag of produce twice a month. Bags full of fruits, vegetables, and a healthy recipe help to encourage and support healthy nutrition.
