BE PART OF THE CHANGE!

Give to the Annual Campaign

Were you one of the 1,400 people who
joined us for the
Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool street party? Is your child one of the over 6,000 children who participated in the Harwood's Art in the Schools program last year?  Then you know what an important role the Harwood plays in our remarkable community.  What you may not realize is how much the Museum's exhibitions and programs depend on support from people just like you.

We're very grateful to the University of New Mexico for supporting 37% of the Harwood's annual budget, covering most staff salaries and building maintenance. We must, however, raise every dollar that supports the Museum's dynamic exhibitions and programs.  Please consider giving at whatever level is comfortable for you to the Harwood's Annual Campaign.  Our goal is to raise $20,000 by the end of the year.  Working together, we can do it! Contact Director of Development Juniper Manley at development@ harwoodmusuem.org or 575.758.9826, extension 116 to learn how you can support The Harwood Museum of Art.

Special thanks to Charlene Tamayo, Sharon Saey, Sonya Luz and Victoria MacElroy for their help with the Harwood's Annual Campaign.

WINTER HOURS

November brings changes in both the weather and the Harwood's hours!

Beginning November 1 those hours are:

Tuesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m.
Sunday, Noon-5 p.m.

The Museum will be closed on Monday.

HARWOOD ON TOUR

Andrew Dasburg, Autumn Fruit, 1934
One of the ways that the Harwood advances its mission is by lending work from its collection to exhibitions at other museums.  And this month is a perfect example!  This Sunday the Indianapolis Museum of Art will open Georgia O'Keeffe and the Southwestern Still Life, to which the Harwood lent Andrew Dasburg's Autumn Fruit and an untitled work by Paul H. Burlin.  That exhibition will travel to the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, the Tacoma Art Museum and the Art Museum of South Texas.           We also lent five works to Macrocosm/Microcosm:  Abstract Expressionism in the Southwest,
an
Bea Mandelman
Winter, 1960s
exhibition on view at the Fred Jones, Jr. Museum of Art at the University of Oklahoma, Norman. Visitors there are enjoying Edward Corbett's White Painting, Beatrice Mandelman's Winter and Moonlight, Louis Ribak's Suspension and Robert Ray's Snow I.

ORALE! KINGS AND QUEENS OF COOL EKPHRASIS PROJECT

Ron English
Ungulate Crucifixion, 2013

The Harwood continues its teen engagement project with an innovative collaboration with SOMOS.  Our youth ekphrasis project will inspire students to write creative responses to works of art included in the  Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool exhibitions.  Ekphrasis is writing that comments on another art form. And something wonderful happens when artists working in different forms collaborate with each other! Students will visit the exhibition, choose a work to which they respond, and use that work as inspiration for a piece of their own writing - which could take the form of poetry, short fiction or even song lyrics and music. The goal is to support young writers' talents, and to encourage dialogue between literary and visual forms of expression while increasing youth exposure to visual art, museums and creative community. The project will culminate in an ekphrasis event at The Harwood Museum of Art featuring student readings accompanied by images of the artists' work.  Plan to join us 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, December 11 in the Arthur Bell Auditorium!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

As I write this our Fiscal Services Technician is dressed like a skeleton for Halloween, workers are cutting a hole in the floor of my office for a new heating system, and visitors are laughing in delight while viewing the Orale! Kings and Queens of Cool exhibitions.  It's another lively day at the Harwood! Indeed, as I reflect on Thanksgiving later this month my thoughts will be with all of the visitors, staff members, donors, artists, and volunteers who co-create the magical experience that is The Harwood Museum of Art.

As you reflect on your own experience with the Museum, I hope that you'll consider participating in the Harwood's Annual Campaign. There's great power in aligning your money with your beliefs!  Every gift counts, and truly makes a difference.  Together we can keep the arts alive in our shared community.

See you at the Harwood!

FILM:  LLYN FOULKES ONE MAN BAND

Friday, November 7 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, November 8 - 2:00 p.m.

During the seven years chronicled in this documentary film, artist and musician Llyn Foulkes creates, destroys, and recreates a pair of large-scale, three-dimensional paintings -  one that costs him his marriage - while trying to keep afloat in the fickle art market. With interviews from veterans of the 1960s Los Angeles art scene such as Dennis Hopper and George Herms, the film reconstructs Foulkes's uncompromising, up-and-down career as he was kicked out of the legendary Ferus Gallery and walked away from a successful career as an L.A. Pop artist. Structured like one of Foulkes' constantly reworked paintings, the film tracks his artistic struggles, ending as he is, at last, rediscovered by the international art world at the age of 77. With music written and performed by Foulkes on a massive, fanciful, self-invented musical instrument that he calls "The Machine," Llyn Foulkes One Man Band is an intimate portrait of an artist battling his own demons as well as the perceived demons of the art world.  Unrated, 1 hr. 28 min, directed by Tamar Halpern and Chris Quilty.

$6 Alliance Members*, $8 General Admission

FILM:  ART AND CRAFT
Friday, November 21 - 7:00 p.m.
Saturday, November 22 - 2:00 pm

Mark Landis has been called one of the most prolific art forgers in U.S. history. His impressive body of work spans thirty years, covering a wide range of painting styles and periods including 15th Century Icons, Pablo Picasso, and even Walt Disney. And while the copies could fetch impressive sums on the open market, Landis isn't in it for money. Posing as a philanthropic donor, a grieving executor of a family member's will, and most recently as a Jesuit priest, Landis has donated hundreds of works of art over the years to a staggering list of institutions across the United States. But after duping Matthew Leininger, a tenacious Registrar who ultimately discovers the decades-long ruse and sets out to expose Landis' philanthropic escapades to the art world, Landis must confront both his own legacy and a chorus of museum professionals clamoring for him to stop. However, stopping isn't as simple as it might appear. Landis, it turns out, struggles with mental illness and, over the years, has developed an outright "addiction to philanthropy" as his elaborate cons offer him the chance to cultivate connection and respect. Art and Craft starts out as a cat-and-mouse art caper, rooted in questions of authorship and authenticity.  What emerges, however, is an intimate story of obsession and the universal need for community, appreciation, and purpose.
