Actress and dramatist Leslie Dillen will perform an excerpt from her sparkling one-woman play about Mabel.  Dillen will then engage in conversation with Mabel's biographer Lois Rudnick about what drew each of them to Mabel as a subject, as well as some of the challenges in writing about and performing her. The evening is the benefit launch for Mabel Dodge Luhan & Company: American Moderns and the West, a traveling exhibition co-curated by Lois Rudnick and MaLin Wilson-Powell and scheduled to open at the Harwood Museum of Art in May 2016.

FROM THE DIRECTOR
Susan Longhenry

Dear Friends,

During this month of Thanksgiving, my thanks are with the many people who contribute their time, energy, expertise, funds, ideas and insights to the Harwood Museum of Art.

For the last ninety years the Harwood Museum of Art has served as a center of Northern New Mexico's intellectual, artistic and cultural life.  The impulse inspiring the formation of the Harwood Foundation in 1923 - and the gift of that Foundation to the University of New Mexico in 1935 - is now carried by the volunteers, donors, Alliance Members, staff members, and other supporters who work to "Bring Taos arts to the world, and world arts to Taos."  I thank each and every one of you for your commitment to our extraordinary museum.

Over the past few years the Harwood has experienced an exciting transformation marked by a 43% increase in attendance, a 30% increase in Alliance membership, and recognition for professional excellence  from the American Alliance of Museums and the Institute of Museum and Library Services.  But we can't keep this momentum going without you!   When you receive our annual giving letter this month, please consider supporting the Harwood Museum of Art at whatever level is comfortable for you. Every gift counts.  Together we can write the next chapter in the remarkable story of the Harwood Museum of Art.

 Sincerely,

A Documentary of the Life and Work of Paulus Berensohn

This films follows the life and work of acclaimed craft artist Paulus Berensohn. His early career was on the stage as a dancer, studying with greats Merce Cunningham and Martha Graham and appearing in major Broadway productions. Paulus transformed from dancer to potter when he asked himself, 'How do you dance in life?' He rapidly established a major reputation as a ceramic artist and published Finding One's Way with Clay, now in its forty-second year of production. Paulus has been recognized by the James Renwick Alliance as a "Distinguished American Educator." This is a free film.

FILM: Cutie and the Boxer

A reflection on love, sacrifice, and the creative spirit, this candid story explores the chaotic 40-year marriage of renowned "boxing" painter Ushio Shinohara and his artist wife, Noriko. As a rowdy, confrontational young artist in Tokyo, Ushio seemed destined for fame, but met with little commercial success after he moved to New York City in 1969, seeking international recognition. When 19-year-old Noriko moved to New York to study art, she fell in love with Ushio - abandoning her education to become the wife and assistant to an unruly husband. Over the course of their marriage, the roles have shifted. Now 80, Ushio struggles to establish his artistic legacy, while Noriko is at last being recognized for her own art-a series of drawings entitled "Cutie," depicting her challenging past with Ushio. Spanning four decades, the film is a moving portrait of a couple wrestling with the eternal themes of sacrifice, disappointment and aging, against a background of lives dedicated to art.

FILM: Frances Ha

Frances (Greta Gerwig) lives in New York, but she doesn't really have an apartment. Frances is an apprentice for a dance company, but she's not really a dancer. Frances has a best friend named Sophie, but they aren't really speaking anymore. Frances throws herself headlong into her dreams, even as their possible reality dwindles. Frances wants so much more than she has, but lives her life with unaccountable joy and lightness. Frances Ha is a modern comic fable in which director Noah Baumbach explores New York, friendship, class, ambition, failure, and redemption.

"Grand, romantic and generous." - Joy Dietrich, The New York Times

"One of the most surprising, endearing, funny and uplifting films of the year. Greta Gerwig is a revelation." - Julie MacArthur, The Huffington Post

"Beautiful. A fleet-footed, black-and-white New York story about a young woman in crisis that turns self-consciousness into an exalted form of authenticity." - A.O Scott, The New York Times
