Mindy Haas
Florida PTA President

November! Wow, where has the time gone?! The holidays are already upon us. The retail businesses are focused on filling their stores with everything you will need through New Year's.

So what is your focus? I hope it's about building your membership each day. So I ask you: have all the families in your school been engaged in PTA? Have the PTA meetings, events, and programs had a positive impact on the students, families and staff? Now is the time to look at this and see what you can do to either step it up or keep things going the way they are for continued success.

The Florida PTA Board of Directors decided that this year needs to be "The Year of the Member". This year needs to be the celebration of each and every member. So how can we do this? First, keep your membership drive alive and continue to ask people to join. Reach out to the community and ask! Second, share your story and your successes in PTA. Tell me how your membership went from 40 to 440 members, the great program you did, or how your school was NOT a PTA and now you are.

I look forward to celebrating "The Year of the Member" with you throughout the year until our Leadership Convention in July.

Until then, I look forward to seeing you at the Second Annual Healthy Children, Healthy Future State Summit.
Healthy Children, Healthy Future!
It's not too late to register for our Second Annual Healthy Children, Healthy  Future State Summit!  You don't want to miss out on the great guest      speakers on topics so important to the overall wellness of our children!

Membership...Stand Up and Be Counted!

Stand Up and Be Counted!

We look forward to hearing
from all of you
from all over the state!

Florida PTA is here for you to help you achieve your membership goals. We have tools and tips to assist you in gathering members all year round. We have tried and true ideas and suggestions we want to give your PTA.

1. Welcome  and include ALL of your parents. Invite every parent in the car loop, front office and after school pick up to join the largest child advocacy group in the nation.
2. Communicate to your parents to find out their needs. PTA is here for every child. Stress to each parent that PTA is not TAKING their time or money, but GIVING to each child through programs and events. Let your parents know PTA is NOT about the drama; but is about caring for the school, teachers and students. Remember to widen your reach to the outside community; invite city, county and state officials to join your PTA.
3. Tell everyone of your great accomplishments and wonderful programs.

PTA can only exist with passionate, energized and active members. Keep the PTA work alive and well; reach out to ALL your parents and tell them of your passion.
We Are Thankful For YOU!
November is a time when PTAs traditionally partner with local pantries and other groups to host end of year food drives to help stock the shelves or host Family Feeding Family events.  We also take time to recognize and thank our military veterans for their service (PSA: Veterans Day is November 11th), file our units' taxes, and remind members to vote on Election Day.

Our VIPs (aka: Very Important PTAs) go through a similar routine every month. Holidays and groups are recognized/celebrated, important educational programs, school functions, and events are hosted, and members are reminded of civic and community responsibilities. Reports and paperwork need to be completed and meetings are hosted or attended.  Oftentimes our hard working units and volunteers are wrapping up one month of activities, rolling out the current month events, and finalizing plans for the next month...all with a smile.

Join us as we take a moment this November, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, to say a sincere and heartfelt THANK YOU to our PTA leaders and volunteers.  You know the importance of parental and community engagement in our students' education.  The time, talent, and treasure you share engaging others is appreciated.
"Year of the Member" Spotlight On...
Alfred I. Dupont Middle School in Duval County is one lucky school with a very impressive PTSA Board member!  During their first PTSA meeting, Jaden, a new sixth grader, told his mom he would like to be involved.  He didn't want to just volunteer to help at events or earn hours, he wanted to hold an elected position!  That night, he became the PTSA's first student elected Board member and Jaden is now the PTSA's Secretary.
Jaden, who already owns his own car wash business, aspires to be an entrepreneur and/or automotive engineer.  His mother, Sheenah Zamora (who serves as the PTSA Treasurer), says, "   I can't even begin to describe the boost in my son that I've seen in his character and his mindset; that he feels like he can really conquer anything."

And this is why Membership Matters!  Membership means getting involved, having your voice heard, speaking up for yourself and others, and advocating for all children.  Your age doesn't matter...your Membership Matters!  Thank you to Jaden and Sheenah for embracing what it means to be true leaders in your community!
Exceptional Child Committee Conference Call
Parents of first, second, and third graders are under intense challenges with new assessments. Students with disabilities are under even more intense challenges with well over 50 percent of the students facing potential retention.  Third grade retention is required if students do not pass the test or have a good cause exemption.  Some schools hold back students in first and second grade.  This session will discuss the harsh realities your child faces and what you as an informed, empowered and proactive parent can do to make the difference for your child. It will provide background information, options you can pursue and some recommendations.  There will be plenty of time for questions.   Click here for information on a helpful conference call with the Florida PTA Exceptional Child Committee.

About the presenter: Mark Halpert is a PTA member and the Co-President of the Learning Disabilities Association of Florida. Mark has been a member of the State Advisory Committee for Students with Disabilities, the Founder of the Florida Advocacy Coalition on Learning Differences, and a Parent Advocate for the National Center for Learning Disabilities.  Mark has spoken at national meetings on success by third grade.

The conference call will take place on  Thursday, November 5th from 8-9 PM .
Dial 641-715-3580 and enter code 934-567 to join the call.

Don't Hesitate to EVALUATE
The Importance of Being Ernest...oops...
The Importance of Evaluation

Welcome to Fall...

School has begun and we are betting your PTA has already hosted a few programs and events for your members.  Perhaps your team hosted a back to school social, planned something special for the teachers and staff, held the first PTA General Meeting complete with student entertainment...and much more.

Almost assuredly you are in full steam ahead mode planning more Fall and Holiday Events....perhaps a dance, family game night, or fall festival.

Regardless of what programs or events you have under your belt or are currently planning for the future you are encouraged to include time to reflect and evaluate each program. This will help to insure you are making the most of your limited resources and that future events are even more successful.

To learn more about evaluating your programs visit our  web site!

Wishing you the best with all your planned programs...and that the insight you learn this year will lead to an even more successful event next year.
American Education Week - November 16-20

The annual celebration of American Education Week spotlights the importance of providing every child in America with a quality public education, as well as the need for everyone to do their part in making public schools great.  PTA can help by planning events to celebrate the importance of educating our children. This year's theme is "Great Public Schools: A Basic Right and Our Responsibility," and will be reflected in special observances each day of the week long celebration:
  • Monday, November 16: Kick-off Day
  • Tuesday, November 17: Parents Day
  • Wednesday, November 18: Education Support Professionals Day
  • Thursday, November 19: Educator for a Day
  • Friday, November 20: Substitute Educators Day
Getting Involved in Your Child's Education

Parents are the biggest influence in their child's life and education, even more important than teachers and classmates/friends. The difference between a good school and an even better school is the involvement of the parents and school community.  Even if a parent doesn't have much time to become involved, 15 minutes of uninterrupted time spent with your child every day can improve study skills, build self-esteem, and go along way toward a successful school experience.

Research has proven that when parents are involved in their children's education, kids do better in school. It's important for us to be involved in education.  Every parent can be involved, even if they can't make it to school during the day or to the PTA meeting.  How?
  • Read with your child, every day; while we would like for them to read great literature works, let them choose something they enjoy - it will be beneficial to both of you.  Let your child see you reading and writing too.
  • Talk with your child about their school day.  Instead of, "Did you have a good day at school?" ask, "What was the best part of your school day?"
  • Check homework - assist if necessary (don't do it for them).
  • Make sure your child is well rested.
  • Make sure your child has breakfast.  If your child's school does not provide breakfast, have items on hand at home for a quick breakfast.
  • Make sure your child attends school every day and is on time.  It's important for not only your child, but the other children in the class.  If your child is late, then the teacher will take time away from the entire class to review with your child.
  • Limit TV/video game viewing on school nights.
  • Vote - in school board and general elections.  Become an advocate for your child; ask candidates about their stand on the issues important to you and your children, i.e., a quality public education.
  • Write a letter to the editor of your newspaper - let them know about the wonderful things our PTAs, schools, and students are accomplishing.
Some parents and families are able to be involved in their child's education in every event. Others may only have time for one or two activities. Whatever your level of involvement, do it consistently and stick with it because you will make an important difference in your child's life.

Native American Heritage Month
Zig Jackson, Mandan/Hidatsa/Arikara, is the first comtemporary Native American photographer to be represented in the Library of Congress.  The image, called "War Mothers" documents a 1995 honor dance performed for Howard Crow Files High and Leroy Crow Files High, veterans from the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation (Library of Congress/Zig Jackson)

In 1990, George H.W. Bush signed a joint congressional resolution designating November as National American Indian Heritage Month.  It is now called Native American Heritage Month. This is an opportune time for your PTA to celebrate the rich and diverse culture, traditions, and historic contributions of the Native people.  It is also a great time to educate your school community about the different tribes, the difficulties they have faced; both in the past and in the present, and the ways they have persevered to overcome these unique challenges.
