Legislation News

Road impact fees to be used for mass transit projects
Legislation sponsored by Commissioner Diaz will make it easier for the County to use road impact fees for mass transit improvements. Road impact fees, which developers pay the County whenever new projects are built, are now spent almost entirely on road construction, in part because the use of road impact fees on public transportation is currently limited to areas south or east of the Palmetto Expressway - a restriction that doesn't apply to road projects. The new legislation eliminates that restriction. Transit projects receiving road impact fees must also
obtain County Commission approval before being submitted to the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization.

New Veterinary college at FIU
Legislation sponsored by Commissioner Diaz will create a veterinary school at Florida International University. The resolution calls for the Mayor's office to coordinate with FIU, the Florida Board of Governors and the Florida Legislature on efforts to establish the veterinary college. Commissioner Diaz has been a strong pets advocate. Earlier this year, he sponsored legislation to explore a partnership with UF's College of Veterinary Medicine to expand spay and neuter services in Miami-Dade County. Currently the University of Florida's College of Veterinary Medicine in Gainesville is the only veterinary college in the state.
