From the Library Administrator

The progress made by the renovation team can be seen in the new colors and carpeting throughout the building. The Adult and Teen Services department moved ahead of schedule and re-shelved the entire Non-Fiction and Biography collections - no small feat. On the Children's floor new furniture has arrived and the installation of light fixtures continues.
Enjoying the new furniture in the
Children's Library on the 2nd floor.

This is the time of year when many of us give thanks for family, friends and other special people in our lives. Consider participating in the library's  Honor Bound program, which puts your monetary donation toward the purchase of library materials in honor or memory of someone special to you.

Congratulations to the Friends of the Library on a successful Odds and Ends Sale. The October sale earned over $400 for the Friends and assisted the library in clearing out unneeded items. Thank you to everyone who made a donation.  Membership in the Friends is open to people of all ages; residents and nonresidents alike.

We've seen increasing attendance at our Drop-In Family Storytimes this fall, reflecting a  trend in libraries across the nation as we play a significant role in early literacy education. The renovation of our Children's department will allow us to offer additional enrichment activities and interactive learning to our youngest patrons.  Storytimes continue to run over the next two weeks (see Children's Calendar) and will pick up again in 2016 when renovations are complete.

Vote here for your favorite bear name!
Take a moment and vote on a name for the library's unofficial mascot, the friendly stuffed bear who sits in the lobby. We received over 300 name suggestions, including this thoughtful response from patron  Kenneth Cleys:
As you see my hat says WPL.
Most people think it means
Woodridge Public Library
But it also means - while you are here -
You are to WORK, PLAY & LEARN
That is what a library is for.
So I am called WPL.

I am reminded of how thankful we are for the opportunity to support the Woodridge community as you work, play or learn with the library. Have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Testing of Automated Phone Messages Begins
The Woodridge Library will be testing a new automated calling system to send phone call notifications to patrons with reminders for overdue items or to notify patrons that requested items are ready for pickup. Only patrons who have requested phone notifications related to library materials will receive automated calls.

Throughout November, patrons who are notified by an automated phone message will be asked to complete a quick survey regarding the message they receive.   Patrons are also asked to share comments on the automated call service with any staff member or directly with Circulation Department Head Julie Lombardo at 630-487-2542 or [email protected].

Feedback from Woodridge patrons will be used to make improvements before the new calling system goes into effect across the 77 libraries that are part of SWAN (System Wide Automated Network).

Patrons can choose to receive library notifications by phone, text, or email.
Please speak to a staff member to change or verify your notification preference.

November's Recommended Resource
Little Pim: Language Learning Online

Although designed for children through age 6, older children and even adults will find these short, well-produced and carefully organized videos a great way to start learning a new language. Available online through the library's website, the Little Pim resource has nine languages to choose from, including English. Short video clips use repetition and focus on common vocabulary words and phrases. Native language speakers narrate the videos.

You only need to learn 500 words to be considered conversational in another language. To start your conversation today have your library card ready and access Little Pim through the Children's page by clicking on the Little Pim panda.
Interested in language learning at a higher level? Try Mango Languages.

A complete list of online databases and resources available to Woodridge patrons is available through the Online Resources page of woodridgelibrary.org .
Art Gallery Showing
November's Featured Artists:
Woodridge Library's Very Own Kate Lehman and Marj Nicoletti
Drawing upon talent found close to home, the Woodridge Library Gallery is featuring artwork by Children's Department staff members Marj Nicoletti and Kate Lehman throughout November.

"New Orleans Street Scene"
Oil on Canvas
Marj Nicoletti calls herself "a Grandma Moses artist", not because she
paints in the style of Grandma Moses but because she started painting later in life, beginning her training over 20 years ago at the  College of DuPage.

Most of Marj's work is in oil or watercolor; however she has done pencil, fresco and encaustic (hot wax). A few of the many places Marj has shown her work include the MaNa Gallery in Chicago, the College of DuPage Wings Gallery and the DuPage Art League. A member of the non-profit  IArtists, Marj has art pieces for sale at the New Orleans style restaurant Heaven on Seven as part of a long-term effort to help victims of Hurricane Katrina. Day-to-day  Marj is often called upon to select and assemble appealing children's materials for programs, signs or book displays.

"Butterfly"
Digital Photograph
Kate Lehman has studied calligraphy and lettering for over ten years, and  is a member of  the Chicago Calligraphy Collective. She b ecame interested in photography a few years ago, studying nature photography at the Morton Arboretum.
No matter the art form, she loves capturing and portraying beauty in her work.  Through the years Kate has inspired the creativity of our young patrons, sharing her artistic talent through children's storytimes, reader's theater productions and hands-on activities.

Please join us as we celebrate the artistic talents of two of Woodridge Library's very own by visiting the  Woodridge Public Library Gallery this month.

Around the Library
A Dalmatian, a brave princess, a pirate and a turtle were just a few of the characters who attended the October 26 storytime.
The Crazy Cat Lady did a wonderful job reading during the costumed storytime on October 28, but we do expect Ms. Mary Ann to return for Wednesday night's program.
One young girl reached a new height registering for a library card along with her father and baby brother in mid-October.
With the World Series behind us it's time for football: on display near the new Training Lab.
