Happy Thanksgiving
Five Suggestions to Help Your Teen Survive Thanksgiving Day

Family time is fun, but can sometimes be stressful for young adults.  If Turkey Day is trying in your house, share this advice:

1. Create a Thanksgiving centerpiece on Thursday afternoon.  It will keep you from fighting with your siblings while parents prepare the meal.

2. Offer to make a side dish or dessert.  The first recipe made by a youngster always gets the best positive feedback!

3. Try a little bit of each food.  This is the big transition from kiddie table to budding adult status.

4. Excuse yourself from the festivities to go make a list of things you are thankful for.  Sometimes you just need some alone time.

5. Make advance plans to meet friends for Friday brunch.  This will help avoid texting during family dinner.

Have a happy harvest,

National Runaway Awareness Month
Many youth are left without a safe and secure place to spend the night.  Annually, thousands of young people run away or end up homeless for a multitude of reasons.  During this season of giving thanks, bring awareness to this troubling topic.

Safe Routes To School Update

Wood Park Primary School in Commack has embraced the Safe Routes to School Program with a new walking incentive program called "Walk Safely to School Month."  This month we've been encouraging students to walk to and from school with a responsible adult.  Every child who walked to and from school received a bracelet to be filled with little foot charms for each walk.

The number of walkers has increased from no more than five families daily, to an average of 25!  The children and their families have had a great time while getting some exercise and spending additional time together.  Wood Park staff and the Youth Bureau are looking forward to planning additional events to keep families active during the colder months.
