Spotlight on Novi History
Did you know that Novi was once a part of Farmington Township? At that time, there were only two townships in Oakland County, Bloomfield Township and Farmington Township. In 1832, Novi Township which was known as West Farmington, separated from Farmington Township and needed a name. This begins the many versions of how Novi got its name. In addition to Novi Township, Lyon, Milford and Commerce also separated from Farmington. In 1834, by an act of the legislative council, boundaries contracted, and Novi assumed its current boundaries. Samuel Hungerford was appointed as the first supervisor.
