Neighborhood Libraries Adopt A Sister Library
The SAY Detroit Play Center is  a youth training center on the northeast side of Detroit with a mission of developing readers and great people.  The brainchild of Mitch Albom, the center features a state-of-the-art recording studio, a synthetic turf football field donated in part by Matthew Stafford, and a 7,000 square-feet digital learning center, among other amenities.  The center is building a lending library and wants our help!  Donations will be accepted for any gently-used books (reading levels K-12) for young people to increase their love of reading until Friday, January 20.  Books can be dropped off at the box next to the holiday tree or at the five Neighborhood Libraries (Salem-South Lyon, Northville District, Wixom Library, Lyon Township, and Walled Lake City Library).  Thank you for giving the gift of reading!

The Friends group are also lending a hand to help!  Rather than books, they are collecting $500 to purchase teen books for the new library.  Stop by the Book Nook for more information or click here to see the donation process!
Win a Wedding of a Lifetime!

Interested couples should visit the Library's website to submit their two minute video as to why they are the couple that should win!

The couple must be willing to let the public vote on every aspect of the wedding from the dress, to the tuxedo, rings, cake, honeymoon and most importantly the lucky couple!  A public reception will take place at Fuerst Park with a private reception to follow at the Library on Saturday, June 24, 2017.

2016 Community Reads-Huge Success!
Our 2016 Community Reads event was the biggest turnout thus far with 216 people in attendance for the author event and 1,048 books/downloads of the title read!  Below is what author of Born to Run, Chris McDougall had to say about visiting Novi for the event:

"Honestly, it was perfect. Novi was A+ in every way. thanks to their publicizing consistently and well in advance, the house was full. the venue was a comfortable space for both speaker and audience, and the set-up for book sales was expertly positioned. I was treated like family or royalty (whichever is better), and treated to an excellent dinner and beautiful hotel. Thank you for arranging the event. Any author would love it."

Want a chance to read the book?   The Friends Book Nook is selling copies for only $2!  Stop by and purchase one before they are gone!

3D Printer Update!
Since unveiling the 3D printing services to the public on June 1  we have had over 40 item requests. Many of these items have been small pieces such as brackets, latches, and adapters. Larger items have included thrones, trophies, GoPro camera holders, phone cases, Gameboy cases, and flag holders. Costs for printing vary widely, from as little as a dollar or two for small models, up to $20 or more for the larger, more complex items.

One of the most complicated items printed was a replica of the Iron Throne from the Game of Thrones HBO series. Not merely decorative, the throne also doubles as a phone charging cradle. The time it took to produce this epic piece was over 10 hours!

During our monthly 3D Thursdays, we demonstrate the printer's capabilities by printing small, quick-to-print objects like Pokémon or animal figurines. Also demonstrated is a 3D scanner, which allows us to scan real objects (including one's own head!) and make them into printable, 3D models. An introduction to basic 3D modeling lets patrons design their own objects as well.

Spotlight on Novi History
Agriculture in Early Novi
When the first settlers arrived to virgin forests and Indians, their first chore was to clear land and build  cabins for their families. Due to the fertile soil of early Novi, farming became a very important part of their lives. Farms were various sizes, from small to large tracts of acreage. Wheat, other grains and fruit were the main crops. Some farmers had yearly yields of 1,000 bushels per year. Merino sheep and high grades of livestock were also important. Farmers could realize seven pounds of fleece per sheep. This high quality wool was taken to the Wool House (still in existence in Novi), weighed and taken to Detroit. After 1800, wheat became less important and dairy products were produced and sold in Detroit. We should not forget the hard working settlers who arrived here and began the long journey to where we are today.
