Spotlight on Novi History
A One-Room Schoolhouse in Early Novi
Travelling south on Taft Road, just before Nine Mile Road, you will notice a vacant lot in the Royal Crown subdivision with no house and only trees. In the early days of Novi Township, this lot was an acre where the Chapman School was located. It was a one room schoolhouse which was used into the 1940s. Surrounded by pastures, crops, farms and barns, the school had white siding and a belfry. Since the teachers were young single women, they stayed (room and board) with a family in a farm house about a mile and a half from the school. Teachers had to arrive early enough to start the fire so that the room would be warm  enough for classes. When the teacher rang the bell at 8:45 in the morning, school would soon begin. Inside, rows of desks faced the teacher's desk, there was a wood and coal burning stove, a cloakroom separate for girls and for boys, a gray water cooler, books, blackboards, a large wall map and a picture of George Washington. There was no electricity and water had to be pumped from the well in front of the school. There was also a woodshed and two out-houses, one for boys and one for girls. The boys were given the jobs of bringing wood in from the woodshed, filling the water container and raising and lowering the flag. This information was taken from written memories of two brothers who attended Chapman School in their youth.
