James Brunk
"Lincoln and Thereabout"

During the month of October we are thrilled to have James Brunk in our Spotlight Gallery with twenty five of his original studio and plein air oil paintings.  James is a landscape painter who resides in Lincoln.  A former aerospace scientist, he began his art studies while living in Santa Fe, New Mexico and Scottsdale, Arizona where he attended Scottsdale Artists School.  Since moving to Lincoln in 2004, James has been active in the local arts communities and formed a plein air painting group among artists in the Lincoln, Roseville, and Rocklin area.

Don't miss these stunning works that capture our humble spot on earth at its best.

Art in Public Places - 2017 Mural Competition

The Lincoln Chamber of Commerce's Lincoln Showcase event on Saturday, September 23rd was great fun with lots of delicious offerings from local restaurants, drinks from local breweries and wineries, and a fantastic band that kept the crowd entertained.

It was also the unveiling event and prize announcement of our four mural artists that took part in the city's first ever mural competition.  The competition was sponsored and organized by the City of Lincoln, the Art League of Lincoln, and the Downtown Lincoln Association.  Here are the winners:
First Prize - $1,500
"No Parking"
featuring Shirley Russell

by Rafael Blanco

Rafael was born in Alicante, Spain.  His grandfather was a known sculptor and his work influenced him since he was a little kid.  Rafael came to the United States for the first time when he was 19 with a full tennis scholarship.  He graduated from Saint Mary's College (Moraga, CA) with a BA in Studio Arts.  He then graduated from University of Nevada Reno (UNR) in an interdisciplinary MFA with focus in Drawing & Painting.  He is currently the Program Coordinator at Feather River College in Quincy, CA.  Rafael has been a studio artist for many years and has an extensive exhibition record both nationally and internationally.  Lately, he has been transforming his studio background in order to create large scale mural paintings.
Second Prize - $1,000
"Ride Down Memory Lane"

by Dylan Silva

Dylan is a sophomore at Lincoln High School and lived in Lincoln most of his young life.  Art has always been his passion.  He has not had much exposure to public artwork and decided to take on the Art in Public Spaces Mural Competition as an opportunity to grow.  He has pushed himself, and challenged his capabilities with the help of some of the greatest art teachers in the area.
Honorable Mention - $500
"Poppies"

by Sheryl Leamer

Sheryl has been painting almost anything paintable for 30 years and still is delighted by how the liquid, brushes and vision can enhance the world.  She likes her work to give people a lift.  She paints what she finds inspiring when given the chance and it usually involves expressing light's effect in some way.
People's Choice Award - $2,000
"Nisenan Tribesman"

by Aimee Phelps

Aimee has created art from her soul since childhood.  She has been involved with sculpture, painting, welding, carving, felting, murals, and more.  Her love of art has brought awards throughout her career.  Aimee's most notable pieces include sculptures for the Sacramento Ballet Peter Pan Gala and the Vaudeville Gala, an interactive art exhibit for the California State Fair, a sculpture for Dia De Los Muertos Oak Park Events, and logo sign murals for Crossfit Gold Rush, Plant Foundry, and the Realtors Office Grounded.  She is also the creator of Art-Through Pods, which are tiny mobile shelters for the homeless.  She teaches painting classes in her neighborhood.  Her mediums are recycled and mixed.
Mural Sites
The only way to truly enjoy the murals is to come see them in person.  The next time you are downtown be sure to take a stroll down Beermann Alley and enjoy our cities new artwork.  Here's where they are at:

We Need You

If you made it this far my guess is that you care deeply about art and especially our local arts.  Either that or fluffy is wreaking havoc with the controls again.

Since the Art League of Lincoln is a nonprofit organization powered by volunteers and currently one paid staff member, yours truly, we are only as effective as the efforts, wisdom, and connections that our board members bring to share.

Consider your skills, experience, past and present partnerships and explore whether you might be able to be part of the force that guides the Art League into the future and in a positive direction that benefits our community.

We are especially in need of a board member who can take on the role as our Treasurer
since that post was vacated due to an illness in the family.  And, if not yourself, please take a moment to consider who you may know and think would be a great fit. Help us get the word out and encourage them to apply to join our board of directors.

We officially vote each year during our Annual Meeting in November, however, board members may be appointed by the current board throughout the year.  So no need to wait, we'd love to have your help now.  Click the link below for information on how to apply.

Sincerely,
John Robeck
Executive Director

Interested but still have questions?  Please join us at our next Board of Directors meeting on Thursday, October 20 at 6 p.m. here at the Art League and talk with board members before or after the meeting.
