M.Arch Student's Design Built as Part of DesignBuildBLUFF Program

Graduating M. Arch candidate Canyon Prusso participated as a visiting student in the University of Utah's DesignBuildBLUFF Fall 2017 design course, and his conceptual and schematic proposals were selected by a jury to become the Spring 2018 build project for the program. Prusso's community kitchen/pavilion space, called "Fire Mesa," was designed to symbolize and cultivate a spirit of unity in the rural desert town of Bluff, UT. Construction of the pavilion (seen above) was completed on April 26, 2018.

Exhibition: Visualizing the Spaces of Actor-Network Theory

In 1998, during a fervor of intellectual activity that questioned the role of objects, political power, and the ontology of nature, the late British geographer Jonathan Murdoch wrote an article called "The Spaces of Actor-Network Theory."  During Spring 2018, the Experimental Geography Studio partnered with architecture graduate student Emily Homan, as well as a graduate student from fine arts, to answer two vexing questions: 1) what metaphors does Murdoch utilize to write about the spatialization of the Actor-Network Theory?, and 2) how might we begin to rip these concepts out of their textual homes and into the sphere of vision? In each case, these practitioners are bridging a gap between geographic visualization and geographic thought, a gap that in the twenty-first century is too often presumed to be exclusively data-driven. Join the Experimental Geography Studio for an exhibition of their work.

Exhibition on display: May 4 - June 4, 2018
Where: Sarkeys Energy Center, Rm. 543

Charles W. Graham Cafe Dedicated in Gould Hall

The Christopher C. Gibbs College of Architecture recently hosted President and Mrs. Boren, as well as M'Liss Graham, members of the Housing and Food Services and A&E Services teams, and a huge crowd of faculty, staff, and students, to dedicate the Charles W. Graham Cafe in Gould Hall. The cafe is named in honor of the late Charles Graham, who served as Dean of the Gibbs College of Architecture from 2008 to 2016. Charles, along with his wife M'Liss, was integral to fostering the collaborative spirit of our College. The Charles W. Graham Cafe serves to honor the Graham legacy by giving students a place to share ideas.

Gibbs Student Organizations Renew Beaux-Arts Ball Tradition

Around 100 students, faculty, and friends of the Gibbs College of Architecture got together for an evening of fun during the 2018 Beaux-Arts Ball, co-hosted by the American Institute of Architecture Students and Interior Design Student Association groups last Friday.

Avery Smith, interior design senior and president of IDSA, said that, "The ball was such a great way to end my time with the college. It was an honor to be on the planning end; the committee worked so hard to make sure this would be a fun night for the students after a long week of finals and reviews. Seeing our students dressed up and relaxed was rare and refreshing for everyone. The turnout was more than we could have hoped for with it being our first Beaux-Arts ball in years. I hope the tradition will carry on and be something students will look forward to year-round!"

Keep an eye out for details about next year's Beaux-Arts Ball, which is open to all students of the Gibbs College of Architecture.
