We hope that everyone has settled into their school year routines and that the year is off to a great start. Pease mark your calendars for the Oakland Mills Fall Festival on Saturday, October 7 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. at the Oakland Mills Village Center and the Other Barn. The event will be held indoors if the weather is inclement. The festival offers something for all ages. Some highlights include free kids crafts, continuous entertainment on the Courtyard Stage, FunDrum participatory drum circle (3 p.m.), local non-profits, and local artisans with handmade crafts.  Support the Stevens Forest Elementary School PTA at their hot dogs/chips/drink booth, and plan to arrive at 11 a.m. for a mini-concert by the Oakland Mills High School Marching Band!

Also, next month we will have our first Lively Arts for Little Ones concert of the season. Rocknoceros will perform October 13th at 10:00 a.m. at The Other Barn. Lively Arts is a great introduction to the arts for children ages 2-5. Families, playgroups, day cares, and preschools are all welcome to join in the fun! Buy tickets at The Other Barn or online.

Calendar Change for 2017-2018 School Year
The Howard County Board of Education has approved a change to the 2017-2018 school calendar, making the last three days of school for students-June 12-14, 2018-three-hour early dismissal days for all levels, including elementary, middle and high schools. Read more here

International Parent Leadership Program
The International Parent Leadership Program (IPLP) is designed to increase leadership capacity of international parents to step into leadership roles in schools and communities as advocates on behalf of the system's nearly 6,000 international students. The six-week program helps international parents understand the framework of the US educational system and the structure and functions of the Howard County Public School System.  Applications are due October 4th.

A-OK Mentoring 
Make a difference! Help enhance the academic and social development of identified Howard County elementary school students in schools near you through a consistent, supportive relationship with a child.  Volunteers must be available weekday, daytime hours to meet one-on-one with an assigned student during the school day or with students in small groups in afterschool programs.
