Chapman Retirement Reception Held in Gage
|
|
OML and MCO traveled to Gage for their monthly board meetings which also allowed them to honor Richard Chapman, longtime OML board member and vice mayor of Gage for his service. Chapman has been an active participant in OML since 2005. He has served on the Mayors Council of Oklahoma as well as the OML board of directors for over a decade. He has dedicated himself to enabling the citizens of Gage to enjoy a quality of life that can only be found in Gage, OK. Richard and his wife Diane will be missed at OML, we wish them all the best in their retirement and want them to know how very much the OML members and staff appreciate all that they have done to make Oklahoma a better place to live.

Janet Smith Represents District 8
|

At the November 2017 board of directors meeting, Janet Smith was named as the District 8 representative for the OML board.
Janet has served as City Manager of Crescent since 2015, and is well-known as an energetic leader, dedicated to improving the public trust through transparency, diplomacy, and fiscal responsibility. She is highly analytical, but brings a personal and positive perspective to complex issues, personnel matters, and organizational change. She has worked comprehensively to develop new policies and procedures for each department, thus ensuring the highest level of productivity and efficiency. Assisting in this effort is the open-door policy that she exercises, while working to develop a self-confident work force where professional efforts are valued and appreciated. More Information

Message From OUBCC on Rulemaking
|
|
The Oklahoma Uniform Building Code Commission (OUBCC) voted to begin rulemaking action at a meeting on Tuesday, January 16, 2018. The Notice of Rulemaking Intent will be published on February 15, 2018. A public comment period will begin on February 16, 2018 and run through March 19, 2018. A public hearing will be held on March 20, 2018 at 1:30 p.m. in their conference room. An written public comment forms received, will be reviewed and addressed during the public hearing. Anyone interested is welcome to attend the hearing.

New Officials Institutes Resume February 3rd in Stillwater
|
|
On February 3rd in Stillwater, OML will host a New Officials Institute at the OSU Alumni Center. Throughout the year OML provides an intensive educational program specifically tailored for newly elected and appointed officials as well as experienced officials who want to keep up-to-date on municipal issues.
The NOI teaches the statutorily required topics such as Municipal Budget Requirements, the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act, the Oklahoma Open Records Act, Ethics, Procedures for Conducting Meetings, Conflict of Interest, and Purchasing Procedures
State law requires each person elected for the first time to a position of a municipality on or after January 1, 2005, OR appointed for the first time on or after July 1, 2006, to attend an institute for municipal officials. The statute is codified at Title 11 O.S., Section 8-114.

OML is now accepting applications for the 2018 - 2019
Community Leadership Development Class
This is a yearlong program designed to equip participants with the skills and information they need to make a positive impact on local community and economic development. Class members in the Community Leadership Development program learn valuable skills in the areas of teamwork, community assessment and planning, economic development and tourism, and community renewal.
There are six class sessions and each one is held in a different city or town, hosted by one of our member cities/towns. This is a great opportunity to learn leadership skills, network with other municipal professionals and see what is going on in other communities.

Governance Workshop Held in Spavinaw
|
|
This past week Daniel McClure, Kelly Danner, and Aspen Roberts had a wonderful opportunity to provide a Governance Workshop for the Spavinaw City Council. The OML team traveled to Spavinaw City Hall and provided an in-depth, hands on training that focused on best practices for conducting meetings, engaging the public, and other public policy objectives. Spavinaw Councilman Mike Bradford said the onsite workshop helped get the Council on the right track, and it "was a most beneficial day for both new members and a great refresher course for the more experienced Councilman!"

Mitchell Wagner Named Guymon City Manager
|
|
The Guymon City Council in Thursday's regular meeting voted to employ Mitchell Wagner as City Manager. Guymon Mayor Kim Peterson said "Mitchell has been with the City for 2 years as an Administrator. I'm confident that Mitchell is the right man at the right time for our community and have great expectations for the future of Our City."

Quality Communities Grant Program - Applications Are Now Being Taken
|
|
OML continues to partner with OU's Institute for Quality Communities to offer the Quality Communities Grant Program which will assist its members with up to 50% of the funding to those communities whose projects have been selected by OU's IQC for a project in their community. Applications are to be submitted to OU IQC and
deadline to submit a request for assistance is February 15, 2018.

Sign Up For OML's Emergency Response Program Training Event - February 23rd
|
|
The Oklahoma Municipal League (OML) is excited to announce a training event occurring through the League's Emergency Response Program. Be sure to sign up for the training event entitled "What is Emergency Management/Whole Community & Planning", which will be held at Rose State College Professional Development Center in Midwest City on February 23, 2018 beginning at 9:00 a.m. There is NO CHARGE for this event and is offered as a service to our members. The training will be conducted by Oklahoma Emergency Management and is designed for Elected Officials, Municipal Staff, and Emergency Managers to attend together.
