Director Carolyn Stager was interviewed on KTOK radio by Gwinn Faulconer-Lippert on Sunday, April 19th. Lippert asked Stager what OML's role was regarding cities and towns, to which Stager referenced OML's New Official Institutes that meet state statues regarding elected officials' continuing education. Stager also spoke of the wide diversity of municipalities in Oklahoma from the very urban to the very rural areas, all requiring different things from OML but in many ways have the same needs. She expressed her concern with the way municipalities currently receive the majority of funding which is through local sales tax revenues. She reiterated the mayors' commitment to study the lack of revenue diversification in funding options as OML works with them to come up with a way to present their concerns to the legislators.
Lippert was also interested to hear Stager's opinion on the current legislation and how this would affect Oklahoma cities and towns. Stager told Lippert that OML will continue to work toward local control for our 460 members, that no municipality was against these industries being in their cities, but they wanted some control in order to protect their public water supplies, preserving local safeguards including zoning.
