Oklahoma Mayors Gather at the State Capitol For the Annual Congress of Mayors
Mayors from across Oklahoma will meet at the state Capitol on January 23 to debate issues facing municipalities and craft a legislative agenda for the 2015 legislative session.

OML Members Named for 2015 NLC Leadership Team 
OML Board Member and Mayor of Broken Arrow, Craig Thurmond has been named as part of NLC 2015 leadership team. He will serve as Vice-Chair of Community & Economic Development Policy and Advocacy Committee.  Also asked to serve is OML Board Member and Sand Springs Council member Michael Phillips.  Phillips has been named to the Small Cities Council Steering Committee.  He along with several other Oklahoma officials will spend this year representing Oklahoma cities and towns on a variety of committees. Next Newly Elected Officials Institute (NOI) February 7th, Stillwater
Are you a Newly Elected Official? If so, and you haven't yet signed up for our NOI Workshops, the next Workshops will be held February 7th in Stillwater and March 12th in Woodward. State law requires each person elected for the first time to a position of a municipality on or after January 1, 2005, OR appointed for the first time on or after July 1, 2006, to attend an institute for municipal officials.

CALT Class IV Applications Now Being Accepted

The Oklahoma Municipal League (OML) is now taking applications for the Citizens Academy Leadership Training (CALT) Program Class IV. This program provides enhanced training and educational opportunities for municipal officials and community leaders.

OML Liaison Board to the OTC

The OML Liaison Board to the Oklahoma Tax Commission (OTC) held their monthly meeting last week.  This board was instrumental in assisting the OML pass HB 1875 that is due to be in effect July 1, 2015. Over the last three years the Liaison board has worked with the OTC to streamline efforts to ensure cities and towns benefit from their efforts.  They are continuing to do so on your behalf as this legislative session begins by meeting with individuals from the Oklahoma Tax Commission as issues arise and the OML board directs. 
Oklahoma Academy Releases Strategies for Improving Oklahoma's Health Status
OML Executive Director and Oklahoma Academy Board Member Carolyn Stager attended the press conference held at the State Capitol on Tuesday, January 20th to unveil their 2014 Town Hall prioritized recommendations.  Each year the Oklahoma Academy will convene to study a topic that is of concern for Oklahoma citizens.  This year's focus was strategies for improving Oklahoma's health status.

Supreme Court Will Decide Whether Same-Sex Marriage Bans are Unconstitutional
On Friday the Supreme Court elevated this term from mostly meat and potatoes to historic by agreeing to hear four same-sex marriage cases. The Court will decide whether it is constitutional for states to prohibit same-sex marriage and whether states may refuse to recognize same-sex marriages lawfully performed out of state.

NLC Update on NFPA Standards 1710 and 1730
National League of Cities' (NLC) representatives on two National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) technical committees have been involved in a multi-year process of revising the NFPA 1710 Standard and developing a new NFPA 1730 Standard. Both documents have been approved by their respective technical committees.
