Diners, Districts and Dialogues Coming to a District Near You!

OML Staff Attend NLC State League Staff Workshop in Philadelphia
OML Team members, Missy Dean and Nancee Morris had the privilege of attending the National League of Cities (NLC) State League Staff Workshop last week in Philadelphia, PA.  NLC hosts a league staff conference each year to bring together every level of state league personnel to enable them to learn more about their position and network with others from different states. 

Stager Attends CMAO Conference in Claremore
The City Management Association of Oklahoma (CMAO) held their summer conference in Claremore, OK last week.  Executive Director Carolyn Stager was in attendance along with over 80 other participants. Stager joined Joan Riley, Chair of OML's Legislative Committee in providing a legislative update to the group. The city managers started off their week playing golf at the Heritage Hills Golf Course followed by several interesting and informative sessions such as Generational Training and Oklahoma Women Leading Government.  The attendees were able to enjoy the hospitality of the City of Claremore with dinner and a tour of the Memorial Museum.  Other topics discussed during the conference were Placemaking, Main Street Redevelopment, and a session on the Drought by J.D. Strong, Executive Director, of the Oklahoma Water Resources Board. 
OML Participated with One Net on Recently Announced Broadband Initiative
President Obama made the announcement to introduce the broadband initiative, ConnectHome, which is a spin off of the ConnectEd program during his visit to Durant, OK, July 15th. ConnectHome will help make high speed internet more accessible to residents in low income housing.
OML's Lara Sardi, Operations & Procedures Administrator, participated in the Oklahoma Broadband Initiative.

Deadline to Submit  OML Board Nominations - July 31st
There are four board seats representing the Oklahoma Municipal League Board of Directors up for election this year and will be voted on at the 2015 OML annual business meeting, Thursday, morning, September 24, 2015 which is held during the OML annual conference in Tulsa. Deadline is Friday, July 31, 2015.

2016 State Legislative Requests

The 2015 Legislative Session is over and it is time to start the process of planning for the 2016 legislative session. OML values the perspective of all members on legislative concerns and we encourage city officials to participate in the process so we will be prepared to present a united legislative effort.

Nominate Your Favorite Mayor for the 2015 MCO Mayor of the Year
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2015 MCO Mayor of the Year.  There are two awards to be won, one for municipalities of 5000 or more and one for municipalities of less than 5000. The awards will be presented at the OML Annual Conference Awards Banquet on September 24th in Tulsa, OK. More information can be found on the OML Conference Website. Deadline for nominations is August 28th.

Fine arrangement: Environmental violators can fund projects as part of penalties

OKLAHOMA CITY - Fines for dumping or polluting don't always have to be paid in cash. Sometimes, violators can complete a community project, in lieu of the entire penalty.

 

The Oklahoma Department of Environmental Policy recently added a drought emphasis to what it calls supplemental environmental projects.

Keep Oklahoma Beautiful's 'Great American Cleanup' a Success
Keep Oklahoma Beautiful's wonderful volunteers went above and beyond during this year's Great American Cleanup in Oklahoma. Oklahomans collected 3.3 million pounds of litter along 1,225 miles of roadway and trails and cleaned up 50 illegal dump sites!
