OML Grants Workshop December 5th

You've asked for it; we're giving it to you! Don't forget to register for the OML Grants Workshop scheduled for Friday, December 5th at Rose State College in Midwest City. OML staff has planned a full day of information, including how to use the right language, success stories, a panel Q&A, when to do it yourself and when to hire a consultant. Don't think that's enough? Good, because we're not done! In addition to hearing about the grant writing process, you'll hear from agencies that offer ACTUAL GRANTS to Oklahoma cities and towns! That's right; we're putting you in the same room with the people that can help!

But wait, there's MORE! Not only have we invited several entities to come talk about the myriad of programs they offer, we've also asked over a dozen agencies and organization from around the state to come set up shop during this event to speak with YOU about helping your community. That's right, you're going to receive ONE on ONE time with these folks!

We'll keep you posted as details become available. Don't miss out on this wonderful opportunity. Make sure you register today!

OML Attends 911 Systems Meeting
Missy Dean, OML Director of Government Relations, attended a meeting in Stroud to talk about 9-1-1 systems and the need for legislation to address adequate funding for these systems.

One of OML's legislative priority issues is to establish a fee for the nine-one-one (9-1-1) system in order to adequately maintain current systems and to uniformly provide the highest levels of technology for emergency nine-one-one (9-1-1) systems throughout the State.

Purcell Keeps Its Heart While Making Strides
Purcell, the Heart of Oklahoma, is making big strides of progress while keeping its small town feel. A city with a population of 6,000 people, it is just off of I-35 south of the Oklahoma City metro.

City Manager Dale Bunn spoke with us about all the exciting progress his city has made.   One such accomplishment is the completed renovation of City Hall that was built in 1935.  The building was able to be modernized while keeping the historic feel in the heart of downtown.

Newly Elected Officials Institute Held in McAlester

Our New Officials Institutes (NOI) are in full swing with the third of six (first one that was) held in McAlester on October 16th at the Eastern Oklahoma State College.  Over 50 elected and appointed officials attended to learn about municipal budget requirements, the Oklahoma Open Meeting Act, Oklahoma Open Records Act, ethics, personnel issues, procedures for conducting meetings, conflict of interest and purchasing procedures.

Every municipal officer elected or appointed for the first time (official) must complete this training with 12 months of taking the oath of office (being put into office).  A number of communities have used this regional training geared specifically for municipalities as a professional development opportunity for city and town staff.  All municipal officials and staff are welcome.

If you missed this one, there are currently three more opportunities for you to complete this coursework.  They will be held in Lawton on November 13, Stillwater on Saturday, February 7 and Woodward on March 12.

McAlester District Dinner Meeting Held With Good Food and Fun

OML District Dinner meeting was held last week in Krebs at Pete's Place. The sixty plus officials who participated enjoyed a great networking opportunity and a wonderful meal.

OML Executive Director Carolyn Stager and Director of Governmental Relations Missy Dean attended and presented an update on the upcoming legislative session and unveiled OML's 2015 Legislative Priorities. We were joined by Rep. Brian Renegar and Rep. Donnie Condit for fellowship and to share with us the importance of getting involved and making contacts with their legislators. Stager and Dean also discussed additional priority issues of concern to OML members and provided updates on OML staff activities.

If you have not yet scheduled to attend a district dinner meeting, you still have four more opportunities. Our next OML District Dinner meeting will be in Woodward at the Woodward Convention Center, October 23rd.
