OKC and Tulsa Mayors Begin the Process to Look at the Need to Diversify City Revenue Sources

In July, Mayor Dewey Bartlett of Tulsa spoke out regarding the need to develop other sources of revenues for Oklahoma municipalities.  The continued dependency on sales tax as the primary source of income has created hardships for most cities and towns across the state and both Mayors Bartlett and Cornett have chosen to form a task force of other Oklahoma mayors to go before lawmakers.

OKC Mayor Cornett on Meet The Press
Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett appeared on 'Meet the Press' with Chuck Todd on Sunday, September 7th.  He was joined by Mayor Marilyn Strickland of Tacoma, WA and Mayor Bill Peduto from Pittsburg, PA to discuss their experiences with rebuilding their communities.  The Honorable Mick Cornett was asked why Oklahoma which is a "deep red" state would back a tax increase.  Mayor Cornett told Todd that OKC citizens realize the value in the capital projects - something that they can touch and know will last.

Tune in to OETA this weekend to see the interview Stager gave this week. Reporter Bob Sands had several questions to pose to Stager regarding the changing role of cities and towns. When Stager was asked if there were lessons to be learned from what the cities are doing she said absolutely.

OML is asking that each community and exhibitor participate in this year's silent auction to raise money for the Oklahoma Regional Food Bank during the 2014 OML Annual Conference. Bring a basket of goods that represents your municipality or business to be auctioned off, example - Oklahoma City basket includes Bricktown items, local restaurant gift cards, local gifts, etc. Please bring all baskets to the center of the Exhibit Hall, known as the Town Square.

Third Annual SLLC Supreme Court Preview Webinar
The State and Local Legal Center's third annual FREE Supreme Court Preview webinar on October 16th, 2014 features Allyson Ho, Morgan, Lewis & Bockius, who will argue two cases this term, Pratik Shah, co-head of Akin Gump's Supreme Court and Appellate practice, and Robert Barnes, Washington Post Supreme Court reporter. A number of tax cases, a sign code case, and a religious challenge to a prison grooming policy, among other cases, will be discussed at the webinar.

Application Process Begins for NLC Officers and Board of Directors
The application process for 2015 NLC Officers and Board of Directors is now officially underway. The 15-person Nominating Committee, appointed by NLC President Chris Coleman, Mayor, Saint Paul, Minn., will be announced later in September. If you submit your application, please let us know. Deadline is October 21st.

Federal Reserve Vote on Status of Municipal Bonds Is a Blow to Cities

Following the vote by the Federal Reserve and Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) to approve new liquidity standards on banks, NLC CEO and ED Clarence E. Anthony issued this statement: "We appreciate efforts by the Federal Reserve, FDIC and Office of the Comptroller of Currency (OCC) to strengthen the banking system by imposing credit and liquidity standards for banks' capital requirements.

Free Installers 101 course offered by the Manufactured Housing Association

Installers 101 Course, October 15 in OKC at the Hampton Inn.  This course is free for city inspectors and can be used for their CE hours with the CIB.
