After seeing the play 33 Variations on Broadway during the spring of 2009, the tale of a terminally ill musicologist racing against her own mortality to find out why Beethoven wrote thirty-three variations on a waltz by Diabelli, Society President & Artistic Director Dean Corey was inspired to curate a number of Beethoven performances from the composer's late period.

We invite you to continue on our journey of Beethoven: The Late Great, a multi-season musical exploration into the final transcendence of one of the greatest composers of all time. Dean Corey will personally guide audiences this season during pre-concert talks for all Beethoven: The Late Great performances. All pre-concert talks are complimentary to ticketholders and begin at 7pm.

Named for Antonie Brentano, who many scholars believe to be Beethoven's "Immortal Beloved," the Brentano String Quartet performs Beethoven's Opus 130 and the Grosse Fuge, as well as Busoni's String Quartet No. 2. Tickets are $45, $40, and $35.

TAKACS QUARTET WITH GARRICK OHLSSON

March 20, 8pm, Irvine Barclay Theatre

The Takacs Quartet performs Beethoven's String Quartet No. 14, the composer's favorite of his late quartets. The quartet also teams up with Grammy Award-winning concert pianist Garrick Ohlsson for Shostakovich's Piano Quintet in G minor. Tickets are $45, $40, and $35.
