URGENT! September 30, 2017 is the Deadline for the Equitable Relief Program for Medicare Part B!
Did you stay on a Covered California plan , instead of enrolling in Medicare? Do you know someone who did? Do you have a Part B late enrollment penalty because of doing this?

If you enrolled in Medicare Part A but not Part B, and you stayed on an Individual Policy from Covered California when you were first eligible for Medicare at age 65 or prior to age 65 due to a disability, you should take action NOW!

Covered California (aka Marketplace plans or individual qualified plans) with their subsidies were designed for those not eligible for Medicare. It is possible that if you proceed with this program you may have to pay back all or some of the subsidies you received

If you never enrolled in Part B, or enrolled late, you are looking at a Part B late enrollment penalty of 10% for each year you should have been enrolled. Additionally, you must wait for the General Enrollment Period (January 1 through March 31) for a July 1 Part B effective date.

To take action TODAY, gather your documents to be able to prove what you have done.
Call Social Security 800-772-1213
Call Medicare Rights help line 800-333-4114

If eligible, you may enroll in Medicare Part B right away or retroactively, without penalty, or have your penalty reduced or even eliminated entirely. Tell them you want help with the “time limited equitable relief”.

Volunteers of the Month

Marta & Santiago joined ONEgeneration as volunteers this summer in our time of need, helping in the Adult Daycare Kitchen. They came with a lifetime of restaurant experience owning the Dolores Café in West LA for over 20 years and being part owners in other restaurants and deli’s.

This Woodland Hills couple will have been married 50 years later this year. They have 2 children and 6 grandchildren. Marta and Santiago moved here in 1964 from Argentina.
Encino Farmers Market
As summer begins to wind down the apples are beginning to gear up. Come taste our wonderful array of Pink Lady’s, Honey Crisp and Fuji’s just to mention a few.

Pomegranates (considered a super food) start arriving this month and they are loaded with vitamin C and potassium, a potent combination of antioxidants and are reputed to ward off colds.

Chuy Berries, of San Luis Obispo County, are bringing soy and corn-free eggs to our market. I have been to his farm and can testify his chickens are truly free range.

Adult Day Care
Dr. Stern serves as the Medical Director of ONEgeneration's Adult Day Healthcare Program. He reviews participant care plans and makes recommendations for enhanced care. Dr. Stern is available as needed for consultation on medical concerns.

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner
The July column began a discussion of diabetes. It will now continue. Diabetes is an illness in which the body does not handle sugar metabolism properly. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas doesn’t produce insulin, the hormone that allows the body’s cells to use blood sugar (glucose) for energy. In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin, or the body doesn’t respond properly to the insulin produced. In both, blood sugar levels in the body rise. In older adults with d iabetes, 90% have type 2 diabetes.

If it is not properly treated, chronically high blood sugar levels can lead to complications such as
Kidney disease, ultimately with the need for dialysis, peripheral nerve damage which can lead
to gait instability, and visual impairment which can lead to blindness. Diabetes also doubles the
risk for heart attack and stroke. It is imperative that the disease be managed properly. Proper
management means attention to lifestyle, diet, exercise and medication.

Blood levels numbers that we must pay attention to are the blood sugar levels and Hemaglobin A1c. A fasting blood sugar level greater than 126 mg/dL is consistent with a diagnosis of diabetes. Hemaglobin A1c is a test that is used to screen for, diagnose, and follow individuals with diabetes. Glycolated hemoglobin, or hemoglobin A1c, is formed in the blood when glucose attaches to hemoglobin. The higher the level of glucose in the blood, the more glycated hemoglobin is formed, the higher the A1c level. This level can be used as a monitor of glucose levels over time. The A1c test result gives a picture of the average amount of glucose in the blood over the last 2-3 months

We are so grateful to the Valley Harmony Singers who came out to sing "Barbershop Quartet" style to the seniors in our Adult Day Care on Friday August 25th.

Adult Day Services Seniors put on their cowboy hats and enjoyed a "Country Western" musical performance in August by The Heart Beats!

Green Light to Mobility
Traffic is crazy, and parking expensive. Yet L.A. has wonderful places to go! Even those who drive find it easier to use public transportation for some trips. It costs cents, not dollars to ride if you are over 62, and there is no charge for the tap card. You will want to have it in your wallet when you need it.

Joanne D’Antonio, Travel Training Coordinator from Green Light to Mobility, visits the ONEgeneration Senior Enrichment Center to offer free travel training services.
Easiest way to get a tap card is to find her is at the end of Lurinda Chin’s monthly AARP Driving classes. Anyone is welcome to stop by September 11th at 4:00 pm and take a few minutes to fill out the application. Bring ID to verify age eligibility, and Joanne takes the photo Metro requires

Need to learn to use the tap card? Attend Joanne’s free workshops at ONEgeneration.  These are held every couple months, and you can also apply for your tap card at the workshop. Enroll with her, and also get free individual phone travel training.

For hands-on guidance, go on a group field-training trip with Green Light to Mobility Travel Trainers. Destinations are great places like The Getty, Griffith Observatory, The Science Center, Santa Monica Pier, Olvera Street, and more. Trips usually start from an Orange Line station that has a free parking lot. They can even teach you to ride safely with a walker.

We are always anxious to share great ideas and resources that can assist caregivers and patients, and thank Dr. Clement for sharing this information and bringing this good product to market.
Dr. Clement's Expert Innovation
Pressure injuries, also known as bedsores, are a common medical complication in the frail elderly. Each year, medical and non-medical facilities combined spend tens of billions of dollars in the care of pressure ulcers, injuries arising from patient falls, and workers compensation claims. One solution according to the American Nurses Association and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health is safer ergonomic practices.

Faced with such a difficult situation while caring for her ailing father, Margarita Clement, Ph.D. MAT, BSN, PHN, invented a patient lift assist that helps both the patient, caregiver and healthcare professional in the prevention of pressure ulcers and injuries. Necessity often being the driver behind a great invention, Dr. Clement‘s Northridge based company Buddy Guard now manufactures the patient lift that she has named the BOEMBA. Patient Lift BOEMBA provides Repositioning with Safety, Dignity and Care. Volunteers and Meal Recipients
Everyday volunteers call homebound frail seniors providing wellness checks and social visits over the phone. These callers are dedicated to their clients each week and treat every senior they speak to as a dear friend. As a conversation starter they frequently ask how their delivered meal was that day, as many of these clients receive our homebound meals delivered to their door daily. Our clients are so grateful for the meals they receive and always let their volunteer caller know how much they appreciate the assistance.
