#OPSProud Spotlight - Benson High School Robotics Team
The Benson robotics team – Legion of Doom - won the robotics competition in Elkhorn this past November. The win qualified the team for state/regional championships and the U.S. Open in April. Team members include Issac Beacom, Sher Lah, Le Kar and Kyle Garner. The Legion of Doom team also competed and won the Omaha North Open tournament in December and received a skills challenge award at that competition. Students Issac Beacom, Sher Lah, and Le Kar competed in the Omaha North open.
Superintendent Communications
Below are the items the Superintendent addressed at the Board of Education meeting:

  • A Budget Advisory Committee is being developed to assess areas of the district budget that might be explored for potential budget cuts for the 2018-2019 school year. The committee will have their first meeting on Jan. 18. This committee will be comprised of staff and community members. The District currently estimates the need to cut approximately $15.8 million from the general fund budget in order to meet the OSERS shortfall.
  • Now that the renovation at Beveridge Magnet Middle is nearing completion, the district is diligently planning for the transition of 6th grade students into the building.

Mr. Ricky Smith Selected to Fill Subdistrict 1 Board Vacancy
On Jan. 8, the board interviewed three candidates for the Subdistrict 1 vacancy. The seat was open after Board Member Ms. Yolanda Williams resigned from the board due to moving out of the boundary lines of Subdistrict 1.

The Board selected Mr. Ricky Smith to fill the seat for subdistrict 1. Smith works in senior admissions/diversity and community outreach at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He is a former Benson and Northwest High football coach, volunteer and has two children in OPS.

Mr. Smith took his oath of office during the board meeting last night and began his term of office which goes until Jan. 4, 2021.

Board Officers Selected
Marque A. Snow was selected as the Board of Education President. Lacey Merica was selected as Board of Education Vice President. They will serve in these roles for the 2018 calendar year.
Important Updates
Superintendent Search Update
The application for Superintendent closed on Friday, Jan. 5. Below is a tentative timeline of the next steps of the search process.

The tentative timeline is:
  • Board members will meet in closed session mid-January to review applications.
  • The Board will announces finalists in late January.
  • The Superintendent Search Committee has tentatively scheduled community meet and greets and board interviews for late January. 
  •  A superintendent could be named by late January/early February

Next OPS Board of Education Meeting
The next scheduled Board of Education Meeting will take place on Jan. 22. It is tentatively scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m.
