Board of Education Information Items
2022-2023 and 2023-2024 District Calendar Proposal
District staff provided a presentation on the proposed calendars for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Families, staff and students will receive a survey this week where they can provide feedback on the proposed calendars. Feedback collected will determine any adjustments that are made prior to being brought before the Board for final approval. The survey will remain open for feedback until midnight on Nov. 30.

Highlights of the new proposed calendars:
  • Students will begin the school year with a staggered start.
  • The start of the school year has shifted by one week returning to our traditional start time.
  • Students and staff will continue to have a full week off for Thanksgiving.
  • Students and staff will continue to have a full two-week winter break.
  • Students and staff will continue to have a full week off for Spring Break.
  • Spring Break coincides with Daylight Saving Time to help students and staff adjust.
  • All students will be off for one week for conferences. This would replace the staggered conferences from previous calendars.
  • At each level, conferences will be offered for two days of the week with one day offering evening appointments, all school staff supporting conferences will be off on Friday after supporting conferences into the evenings, and each of the days not used for conferences will be used for providing building-level professional development for staff. Conference days are balanced so school staff at each level can attend conferences themselves for any of their children at other levels.

The conference schedule would be:
  • Elementary
  • Monday and Tuesday – Conferences with evening appointments on Tuesday
  • Wednesday and Thursday – School/program based professional development
  • Middle School
  • Monday and Thursday – School/program based professional development
  • Tuesday and Wednesday – Conferences with evening appointments on Wednesday
  • High School
  • Monday and Tuesday – School/program based professional development
  • Wednesday and Thursday – Conferences with evening appointments on Thursday
  • Friday - All staff supporting conferences off

Turnaround Schools Update
The Board was provided an update on the Omaha Public Schools Turnaround Model which currently supports Belvedere Elementary, Minne Lusa Elementary, and Fontenelle Elementary.

The Omaha Public Schools Turnaround Model focuses on four key areas: leadership, academics, culture and climate and operations.

Within those four areas, the Omaha Public Schools Turnaround Model works to:
  • Focus on positive relationships with students and families
  • Develop short cycle plans with identified high priority goals and actions for each school
  • Implement Multi-Tiered Systems of Supports for Academics and Behavior
  • Use Elementary Support Teams
  • Provide literacy supports for teachers and student learning
  • Create welcoming school environments for students through beautification projects
  • Facilitate professional development for teachers and leaders

Results
The turnaround schools have begun to see the results. The average percentage of students who met growth projections at the Turnaround Schools compared to similar schools in the district has increased. In addition, attendance has increased at the three schools.

Next Steps
The work of the Omaha Public Schools Turnaround Model will continue. The team is preparing the turnaround school report as well as developing a turnaround matrix for continuous improvement. The staff are also creating a guiding coalition and introducing implementation review cycles.
