#OPSProud Spotlight - PSAT/NMSQT Scholar
Burke High School senior, Tristen Sims was recognized this fall as a National Hispanic Scholar. He was selected by the College Board for scoring in the top 2.5 percent among Hispanic and Latino Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) takers.

Tristen has also been involved in Boys Scouts for 12 years and he’s currently finishing up his Eagle Scout Award project, which entails making neighborhood libraries. In addition, Tristen is involved with Burke’s Focus Program and has been in FOCUS since the third grade. " The focus of the Focus Program at Burke High School has been a cross-curricular model in which the school is able to integrate the extra-value standards (leadership, communication, technology) into the English, U.S. History, and FACTS (freshman academic career and technical seminar) courses."

Board of Education Action Items
First Reading - 4040 Social Media Policy
The Board of Education approved the first reading of the district's social media policy. The primary purpose of any Omaha Public Schools social media account is to communicate information from and about the district or school to families and the larger community. The Omaha Public Schools social media efforts align with the district’s following guiding principles: safe, healthy and engaged students, accessible transparent and two-way communication and engaged and empowered parents and families.

The new policy addresses the following:
  • Approved district social media sites
  • Professional use of social networking sites
  • Appropriate boundaries between employees personal and public online behavior
  • Copyrights and fair use
  • Creating and maintaining district approved social media sites
  • Political endorsements

The policy will be on the consent agenda at the board workshop on Nov. 20. A second reading of the social media policy will be brought forth at a future Board meeting in December. To review the full social media policy, click here.
Board of Education Information Items
Below are the items the Board of Education discussed at last night's Board of Education Meeting.
Transforming Kindergarten
In 2013, kindergarten teachers and Donna Dobson, Director of Elementary Education initiated the project Transforming Kindergarten. Since then, kindergarten teachers and CIS supervisors have worked collaboratively to insert purposeful play in the classroom. The project moved to integrating curriculum and resources into a Curriculum Guide for all teachers to use as they incorporated the practice of purposeful play in their daily schedule. The three main aspects of transforming kindergarten include purposeful play, instruction and classroom set-up. Kindergartners are learning how to solve problems, creatively explore and use higher level thinking skills. The concept is being utilized at varying degrees in all kindergarten classrooms across the district.
