#OPSProud Spotlight- Chandler View and Northwest High Magnet Selected as 2017 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools

Chandler View Elementary and Northwest High Magnet School were selected as a 2017 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School. “Across the country, 45 schools, nine districts and nine post-secondary institutions are being honored for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.”

Here are just a few highlights of the schools environmental projects.

Chandler View Elementary’s Ecology Club plays a vital role in reducing the school’s environmental footprint. Students manage the class and plastic recycle bins and encourage parents to sign-up to help. The club collaborates with Fontenelle Forest to harvest seeds for the annual Green Apple Day of Service. The school also has a wellness committee that sponsors a wellness night and partners with several local organizations.

At Northwest High Magnet, the school collaborated with the University of Nebraska at Omaha Service Learning and its Environmental Sustainability class to engineer and build a rain garden to capture and filter storm water runoff to help solve the problem of Omaha’s combined sewer systems. The rain garden also acts as a habitat for declining species. The rain garden project won the Nebraska state title for the “Samsung Solve for Tomorrow” contest and was featured in the National Geographic’s Next Generation Environmental Leaders online publication. On Wednesday, July 19 Chandler and Northwest will receive their awards in Washington D.C.
