Netflix on Net

OSHEAN is pleased to announce the availability of Netflix content 'on net' through its peering partner, Northern Crossroads (NoX).  OSHEAN members can now access movies and television programming stored on Netflix Open Connect servers through this peering relationship.

Other than shorter buffer times and improved response time, this will be transparent to your users.  Users will continue to access the familiar Netflix.com website and the determination from where content will be streamed will be made automatically. Any content served by Netflix using the NoX peering session bypasses the commodity Internet and therefore is unmetered as part of the OSHEAN Internet access pricing policy.

Forecast Is Cloudy

Okay, lots of bad play on words going on around Cloud technology so I had to get mine in.

As many of you know, OSHEAN is involved in a number of activities these days in developing the next generation of over-the-top services, many of which will involve the implementation of Cloud services. Any of you who have spent time looking at the world of cloud services and technologies know that the market begs for definition but this column is word count limited so I will defer.

One conclusion drawn from our investigations is that there will be many OSHEAN offerings required to cover the myriad of member requirements and we need to develop and roll these out in a prudent and deliberate manner over time. Testing is going very well and we plan to make the first of these service announcements within the next couple months.

OSHEAN's Cloud services will strive to deliver a family of best of breed offerings that offer choice, compelling price points, public and/or private implementations and service assurance. We plan to leverage OSHEAN's infrastructure to deliver high performance and OSHEAN's member collaborative to hit compelling price points. So whether you are looking at cloud storage, flex compute, replication, disaster recovery, remote desktop or VOIP, I encourage you to talk with our technical team about what we are doing. We are looking for input in planning feature sets, architectures and setting priorities.

Also, stay tuned to our continuing series of member forums in which we will detail areas of interest in cloud services. The April CIO forum for instance, was a deep dive on Desk as a Service (Daas) applications, one of our early service offering objectives.

Staff Spotlight: Jonathan Domen

Meet Jonathan Domen, OSHEAN's Senior Network Architect.

Jonathan is an architect for new services that are being developed for OSHEAN members.

How do OSHEAN members benefit from what Jon does?

Jon will be working on new projects involving cloud offerings to members, as well as traveling to member sites to help develop technical requirements and procedures for new members and existing members. Jon is excited to help facilitate members in the utilization of OSHEAN's services and offerings.

Jon's Background

Jon recently was a network analyst working with a team at Bryant University where he worked full time for almost 11 years. Over that time Jon worked in classrooms, labs, the Helpdesk, and Network Operations.

 Out of the Office

Jon always enjoys trying new things and trying everything once. When he was growing up he enjoyed working on cars on the weekends and helping out at the local garage. Recently Jon has been helping out with house hold repairs for a friend who just bought a new home. He helps friends and family with their computer problems and also volunteers in IT support for The Greene School where his wife is a teacher.

Bringing The State Together With One Book

Reading Across Rhode Island
Reading Across Rhode Island

On May 3rd, OSHEAN hosted a statewide videoconference for Reading Across Rhode Island (RARI).  During the conference, RARI discussed The Beauty of Humanity Movement written by Camilla Gibb. The event was streamed live from Smithfield High School, with 100 students in attendance, and has been republished for on-demand viewing.

Reading Across Rhode Island provides a community read program to the state, and has been highly successful as it finishes its 11th year. The One Book, One State program allows the state to jointly recognize the importance of reading and education within Rhode Island. It also allows the entire state to read, relate, and interpret the same book within the same period of time.

Camilla Gibb was born in London, England, and grew up in Toronto, Canada.  She  has gained notable recognition for many of her works, including the City of Toronto Book Award, and the CBC Canadian Literary Award for short fiction.
