STOP Obesity Alliance

Physician Survey

 

A new survey out from the STOP Obesity Alliance found that 90 percent of primary care physicians surveyed said they felt it was their responsibility to help patients lose weight, but 72 percent of these doctors said that nobody in their practice was trained to deal with obesity issues.

February: Million Hearts Initiative

Million Hearts is a national initiative from the Department of Health and Human Services to prevent 1 million heart attacks and strokes over five years. Million Hearts brings together communities, health systems, nonprofit organizations, federal agencies, and private-sector partners from across the country to fight heart disease and stroke.

Community College  

2 Career Tour 

 

Department of Labor Secretary Solis and Dr. Jill Biden, Vice President Biden's wife, began a bus tour last week around the country. Their tour will highlight the innovative ways that community colleges and businesses are partnering to get students jobs. They began their tour at Columbus State Community College where the learned about LogisticsArt, a program that works with 16 Ohio companies and has placed over 1,000 students in local jobs.

6th Annual Rachel Carson Intergenerational  

"Sense of Wonder" Contest

 

The EPA invites individuals to submit creative projects to the 6th annual Rachel Carson intergenerational "Sense of Wonder" contest. Awards will be given in four categories: photography, essay, poetry and dance.    

 

The deadline for entries is June 1, 2012, and winners will be announced in September 2012.

The National Women's History Museum Act would provide the National Women's History Museum with a permanent home in Washington, D.C. Legislation offers members of Congress the opportunity to recognize women's successes, build on their accomplishments and empower future generations.

ACA Saves $3 Billion  

 

Since March 2010, when the Affordable Care Act was signed into law, the program has saved older adults and individuals with disabilities over $3 billion in costs for prescription drugs, said HHS recently.

DiabetesSisters' SisterMatch Program
for Women with Diabetes
 

DiabetesSisters' is an  organization that offers a range of education and support services to help women of all ages with all types of diabetes live healthier, fuller lives. They are now offering a new program for women called SisterMatch.  

 

SisterMatch works to connect women with diabetes to each other. The central concept is that women earn quilt blocks by participating in knowledge tests, personality quizzes, and health challenges. Each woman's quilt is then woven into a Community Quilt.

The Woman's Building Library at the World's Columbian Exposition 

 

The Center for the Book at the Library of Congress in partnership with the National Women's History Museum and the Washington Area Group for Print Culture Studies is hosting a special presentation of Right Here I See My Own Books: The Woman's Building Library at the World's Columbian Exposition (University of Massachusetts Press January 2012).  

 

The book's co-authors, Sarah Wadsworth, associate professor of English at Marquette University and Wayne A. Wiegand, F. William Summers Professor of Library and Information Studies Emeritus at Florida State University, will be presenting.  

 

WHEN: Friday, March 2, 3:00 - 5:00 p.m.

This is going to be a very special event with Right Here I See My Own Books offering new insights about this first effort to assemble a comprehensive library of women's texts at the end of the 19th Century.
