Your Community Brief from Oak Ridge High School
Friday, October 20, 2017

The weeks are certainly flying by this school year! Homecoming '17 has come and gone already, but as you will see herein, we had a terrific week. This past Tuesday we also kicked off the start of the second quarter of 2017-2018 and we will issue first quarter report cards on October 26th.

Once again I want to remind any of our Pioneers needing extra help to take advantage of the various free tutoring opportunities we have available (see below). Now is the time of the school year to reach out for that 1:1 time, so please do so if needed!

I hope this issue finds you having enjoyed a productive week and set for a pleasant weekend. Thank you very much for your continued support.

With Pioneer Pride,

Mrs. Jennifer Bellinger
Principal

No Excuses Mentoring Program (NEMP)
Sponsor: Mr. Orlando Norwood, Assistant Principal

Prolific author and profound speaker, Andre Alan Williams, once noted that "excuses are crutches for the uncommitted." More often than not, behind most downfalls, failures or lack of success is found as an excuse as to why that which was sought after was not accomplished. The "No Excuses Mentoring Program (NEMP)" of Oak Ridge High School exists to develop young men that have been labeled by society as minorities.

The program aims to provide the opportunity for each participant to engage in society, excel in education, learn more about self, and attain awareness of their surroundings. NEMP is a program that offers much needed hope targeting this positive movement to minorities. Through NEMP, Mr. Orlando Norwood (sponsor) has taken on the task of building men of scholarship, leadership and community service for all mankind.

Marcus Taylor sets Oak Ridge record with 6 TDs against Freedom on Monday, October 9th

Marcus Taylor set what is said to be an Oak Ridge single-game touchdown record with six as the Pioneers outscored Freedom 58-30. Taylor, a 5-foot-8, 165-pound senior, took the opening kickoff to the house, ran for a score, and his first four catches all went for TDs in a performance that set the school record.

"[Taylor] is probably one of the most dynamic, hardest working players I've ever seen," Oak Ridge coach Clint Johnson said. "If this guy was 6-foot-one, every team in the country would want him, and if I had 11 Marcus Taylors on the field, we'd win the state title." Taylor broke the 24-year-old school record previously held by Maxwell Joseph, who scored five touchdowns in 1993, and Demetrius Cox, who had five scores in 2002.

Darvion "Pinky" Bailey Recognition

Congratulations to Oak Ridge's own Darvion "Pinky" Bailey for being invited to the All-American Offense-Defense Bowl!

The 12th Annual Offense-Defense All-American Bowl Week will be taking place in New Orleans, Louisiana from December 27-30th. Their Selection Committee has been relentlessly pouring over camp evaluations, Standardized Athletic Testing (S.A.T.) data, and video highlights to bring back the most exciting and prestigious All-American competition for the twelfth year in a row!  The hand-selected rosters are the product of intense pre-season scouting from hundreds of Offense-Defense coaching personnel, culminating in what has become the biggest invitation-only youth and high school football event in the world!

Alumni News: Antonio Blakeney

Antonio Blakeney, a former Oak Ridge High School standout and McDonald All American, will be playing with the Chicago Bulls this NBA season.

Thanks to a slew of dynamite performances in the NBA Summer League, Antonio Blakeney found a spot on the Chicago Bulls' roster. However, it's the promise of Blakeney that just might showcase the guard's untapped potential.

Friday's Motivational Moment!MM

Life is a gift.

Today before you think of saying an unkind word -
think of someone who can't speak.

Before you complain about the taste of your food -
think of someone who has nothing to eat.

Today before you complain about life -
think of someone who went too early to heaven.

Before you argue about your dirty house, someone didn't clean or sweep -
think of the people who are living in the streets.

Before complaining you've too much homework and not enough time -
consider those around the world who wait for a teacher to visit their village once per week.

Before whining about the distance you drive -
think of someone who walks the same distance with their feet.

And when you are tired and complain about your job -
think of the unemployed, the disabled and those who wished they had your job.

Pause before you think of pointing the finger or condemning another -
remember that not one of us are without our own issues.

And when depressing thoughts seem to get you down -
put a smile on your face and be thankful you're alive and still around.

Life is a gift - Live it, Enjoy it, Celebrate it, and Fulfill it!!

Have a wonderful weekend Pioneers!
