Oakcliff is Winning !!!!
IRC to Match Race Champs
July 24,2012
Greetings!
Once again it was a busy weekend for Oakcliff and "Oakcliff-ers" all over North America.  From Jeff MacFarlane starting the Quebec St. Malo race to Chris Poole's team who won Oakcliff's ABC Qualifiers advancing to the US Match Race Championships plus a simultaneous and competitive Grade 4 at Oakcliff and a big success in Newport on the 50, it was a great weekend.

Read below for more details but please also come out for our regularly scheduled training:  Tonight we'll have the Match Race Drills, tomorrow Coached Fleet Racing and then of course
Classic Racing on Thursday followed by a BBQ where you can bring something to share or toss some money into the trophy.  If you can't make week day training we have match racing drills this Sunday and then you can go straight into match racing for classics.  A very nice Sunday of sailing.  Sign up for any or all by clicking on the links above or at any time go to

Acorns Excited, Enthused and Exhausted

I know that many of you kind of get the idea of the acorns and saplings.  Also here at Oakcliff we are going full steam ahead knowing we are having a great time and all are learning a lot but we don't necissarily stop to think about how much we are accomplishing.  Then something hits you that makes you pause and realize how amazingly this program is shaping up.  This is an excerpt from a text sent to a acorn parent:

"We sailed with the saplings and I learn so much every single time I'm out. Like I've only been out twice on these boats but you learn so much every time and match racing is sooooo awesome!!!!  Well I'm exhausted and going to bed.
"

Temptation Oakcliff - WINS!
Temptation Oakcliff HIking Hard
Speaking of learning - we learned that if you keep calm, have decent starts, and don't make mistakes you can win a sailboat race!

With sponsor Art Santry at the helm and a team that formed, bonded and excelled we were about to win the series with a four and a half point buffer.  The things i was most proud of was that every maneuver came off without a hitch.  I can't remember the last regatta where I can say that the crew work was near perfect.  And I have been around for a looonng time.

The conditions were atypical Newport with the first two days having morning wind that allowed us to get in a couple of races but then dropping and dying to nothing.  The last two days were more normal with medium to strong sea breezes building.  With a concentration on changing gears and rig set up and sails for each condition we were able to beat a wide variety of boats in our class.

Also Art commented that the improvement from the beginning of the season to today was incredible and I would add that the professionalism and demeanor of the whole team was top notch.  Can you tell?  I am very proud of our team. :-)
Oakcliff Saplings Jump in and Get 2nd
Back at the ranch, it was very rewarding to see the Oakcliff teams come together and perform at high levels as this week's Clinegatta went along.

Coach Will Tiller used a different perspective than some of the other coaches who have been at Oakcliff this year. He focused on how a crew can affect speed at different points in the race and how to anticipate the situations. Will was assisted Brad and Harry who are his regular crew on the world circuit.  They sailed along with the teams and moving  from boat to boat giving coaching tips as they went.

Will is now working on another customized  coaching plan for the Oakcliff Grade 3 he is coaching August 2-5. This event is oversubscribed so no more entries are being accepted but anyone who wants to volunteer for the clinic or the regatta should contact Bill Simon. We do still have openings for the Grade 4 Clinegatta with coach Tom Burnham August 16-19.

PLAY BY PLAY
There were three Oakcliff Teams comprised of Saplings and Acorns. Since the Acorns arrived on Monday they had only sailed on the Match 40s a couple of days before the Clinegatta started. Many of them were new to big boats and most were experiencing their first match race event. Chris Kennedy's team showed perhaps the best improvement during the regatta. In round robin one they were 2 and 5 and in 4th place.  They improved in he second round to 4 and 5 only losing to another Oakcliff team skippered by Brendan Larrabee. Chris's team included Madeline Gill, Dave Rodriquez, Catalina Feder and last Acorn session's Catherine Walsh. Catherine was a race committee volunteer who was recruited to join the team at the last minute when Oakcliff Supporter Radhika Chalasani injured herself before the first race and was not able to continue.

David Niemann's team from the Midwest and mostly Madison, Wisconsin dominated the event from the beginning. They were 5 and 0 in the first round robin and lost only to Chris Kennedy in the second round robin. So it must have been a little scary for them when they lost the first semi final race to Oakcliff's Jacon Mayer's team and were behind in the second race. Superb boat handling got them through and into the finals where they won two straight to grab a well deserved win.

After a little more coaching and an umpire debrief David Niemann's team raced to Jack Halyards to get their beverage and have hang their signed medal with all of the other Oakcliff  winners before racing to the airport. David's last question:  "What other events can we come back to Oakcliff for this year?"  A satisfied customer.

FINAL RESULTS
From 1st to 6th: David Niemann, Chris Kennedy, Doug Shannon, Jacon Mayer, Brendan Larrabee, Danielle Gallo
Well I'm currently sitting at a Dunkin Donuts trying to finish this newsletter before getting back to Oyster Bay so should probably push 'send' and get on the road.  One more thought though: Summer is half way over, and August is a great time to introduce new friends and family to Oakcliff.  Consider something you haven't tried yet. Classics? Entering your first Grade 4?  Bringing your company for a team building?  We are here to help you plan your next move.

See you VERY soon,

Start of the Quebec St Malo Race
Jeff MacFarlane started the Quebec St Malo race on EDF Energies Nouvelles
this weekend. They are currently sitting mid-fleet.  You can track the race here

The thing that I always forget is how far they have to sail just to get out of the St. Lawrence.  This means a lot of near shore sailing.  With only 2 people on board it requires smart sleep planning so their brains can keep them alert to dangers like shore and shipping as well being as tactically smart.
