Being Prepared for the Worst

Did you know that a recent 7.9 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Alaska prompted a series of tsunami alerts? Fortunately, the alerts were lifted within hours, but boaters should always be prepared with important information like the weather forecast at sea and the timing and severity of the first currents. NOAA's National Weather Service offers this additional advice:
  • Have a marine VHF radio on board. Tune into channel 16 where the U.S. Coast Guard will broadcast emergency messages.
  • Put a plan together in advance and know what to do if you are in port or at sea. Consult the U.S. Coast Guard or local authorities for safety information and regulations.
  • Prepare a disaster kit and have it on board. If at sea, plan that you may have to remain at sea in case ports have been damaged.
