Preparing for Hurricane Season

Wit h the beginning of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1, NOAA's Coast Survey is getting prepared.

Coast Survey management has been meeting with the U.S. Coast Guard, port authorities, NOAA National Weather Service and communities to prepare emergency response plans and outline roles and responsibilities. Hurricane exercises and readiness meetings have been held throughout southern, eastern and the Gulf coast states including regions that were impacted by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and/or Maria last August through October.

Individuals should prepare for potential hurricanes as well. Safety tips and resources as well as information about what to do following a hurricane can be found on NOAA's National Weather Service website.

Spotting Someone Who's Drowning

According to historical data, approximately 750 children will drown next year. Even more shocking is the fact that about half of those drownings will occur within 25 yards of a parent or other adult.

It's important to note that people rarely call out for help when drowning. This is because their mouths are often not above the surface of the water long enough to exhale, inhale and then call out for help. And drowning people can only struggle on the surface of the water for 20 to 60 seconds before submersion occurs.

To help prevent drownings, recognize the signs that someone is in trouble:
    • Head low in the water, mouth at water level
    • Head tilted back with mouth open
    • Eyes glassy and empty, or closed
    • Hair over forehead or eyes
